Position Overview (Summary/Objective):
Supervisor of the Electro-Mechanical Engineering Design group for the Mechanical Engineering Department in Danbury CT.
Responsibilities:
- This position requires an experienced mechanical engineer to apply existing skills to solve high complexity interdisciplinary tasks. You will be responsible for leading an integrated product team in designing tooling and related flight hardware. Must be a technical SME in direct mechanical engineering areas with knowledge of other related disciplines and functions. Must have the ability to work self-directed with very limited oversight and in a team environment. Will be accountable for both space flight and non-space flight development program deliverable while maintain cost and schedule. Provide strategic vision, lead projects outside of normal job responsibilities, and communicate with external parties such as customers and vendors.
- In addition to your engineering technical tasks, you will be responsible for supervising a team (~10) of diverse mechanical engineers with varying levels of experience and education. Providing overall section leadership which includes, managing work assignments, setting and achieving technical standards, organizing training, ensuring compliance to company procedures, balancing resources, setting priorities, and overseeing employee development.
Basic Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Sufficient experience to be a subject matter expert in a mechanical engineering area and the ability to direct and check other mechanical engineer’s technical work
- Good communication skills with experience directing and overseeing the progress of other technical experts, developing technical tasks including cost & schedule estimates, and meeting planned commitments
- Expertise in the tools needed for mechanical design, CAD, GD&T, with exposure to typical industry standards and military specifications
- Electronics Packaging - Proficient in electronic packaging, housing designs, mechanical layouts, manufacturing, testing of electrical components, EMI shielding, connectors, and CCA construction types, CCA assembly techniques, knowledge of sensor systems and detector types, performance requirements, detector alignment requirements and proper mounting techniques for sensor systems
- Tooling Design - Proficient in producing detailed tooling designs (pad and flexures bonding, PAM's, strong backs, shimming), develop tooling for tests (proof, functional), installation/integration tooling (6-DOF's, alignment aids) transport equipment, and metrology equipment tooling (Stability, range of motion)
- Proposal preparation - Proficient in cost estimates, BOE's, and technical content
Preferred Qualifications:
- Opto-Mechanical Design - Proficient in reliable optomechanical design techniques and processes as it relates specifically to optics, i.e., dimensional tolerancing, kinematic mounting, athermalization, optic bonding, coatings, EMI gridding, etc. to ensure optical bench stability & performance over specified environmental conditions.
- Mechanisms Design - Expert in the implementation of motion (bearings, gear drives, etc.) and isolation systems (passive and active). Knowledgeable in analyzing and developing active mechanism designs, i.e., focus drives, filter/calibration mechanisms, roll/pitch motor drives, gimbal drives, shutters, solar array deployment, etc.
- Mechanical Manufacturing - Proficient with manufacture and assembly of electro and opto-mechanical systems, devices, and components such as lens barrels, metering structures, and related alignment tooling.
- Engineering Analysis software - Exposure to the concerns of other related disciplines (structural, thermal, manufacturing, optical, etc..) as it relates to mechanical design. Proficient in the use of tools such as the standard bolted joint spreadsheet, CCA mass and fatigue spreadsheets (structural), venting spreadsheet, etc.
