This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface. 

  

As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, engineers, and designers, you will support systems engineering for various spaceflight systems. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of the development of the next lunar landers. As the Fault Management & System Autonomy (FMSA) Systems Engineer you will be expected to lead and support various roles including fault management architectures trades and studies to ensure optimization of the design, requirements management and decomposition, integration, verification and validation. Your attention to detail will be used for managing requirements development, documenting interfaces between elements and disciplines and drive design maturation. 

You will work directly with NASA and our National Team Partners as part of the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program. You will play a key role in developing Blue Moon Lunar Lander (Link: https://www.blueorigin.com/blue-moon) that will return humans to the Moon and extend human presence permanently beyond the bounds of Earth.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Establish and control fault management architectures including design principles and requirements

  • Define redundancy architecture, including cross-strapping and fault containment regions for integrated systems

  • Architect, design, and analyze autonomous behaviors, modes, and states

  • Participate in all aspects of integrated hardware/software system verification and validation including planning, execution, troubleshooting, issue resolution, documentation of results, and reviews

  • Monitor and approve fault management and autonomy design, development, and test

 

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, physics or related technical subject area

  • Minimum of 2+ years of proven experience in system engineering.

  • Demonstrated experience with fault-tolerance strategies and architectures for safety and mission critical systems

  • Experience with the full lifecycle development of aerospace systems, including requirement definition, design solution definition, implementation, integration, verification and validation, qualification, commissioning, and operation

  • First principles knowledge of all major spacecraft subsystems

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic work environment

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

 

Desired:

  • Experience with design, development, and certification of human spaceflight systems, avionics system architectures and designs, and radiation environments/effects

  • Experience with logical and physical architecture definition and decomposition

  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing

Paid Time Off:  Up to four (4) weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours, and up to 14 company-paid holidays for all regular employees (including part-time), fixed-term, and interns.

Discretionary bonus: Employees may be eligible for discretionary bonuses in addition to base pay. Bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results.
