Position Overview:

The Optical Manufacturing Engineer (Methods Engineering) is responsible for leading production efforts for advanced and exciting optical products that have significant direct impacts on national security. In this role, the Engineer will be working hands on with expert opticians and technicians in a dynamic manufacturing environment. The Engineer will collaborate with, and be mentored by, senior engineering and technical experts to solve complicated problems while focusing on improving manufacturability and efficiency of their assigned programs. As opportunities arise, the Engineer will be tasked with process development/improvement tasks with an overall focus on carving out a career path based on their skills and interests.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Manage the technical aspects of a program from inception to delivery including:
    • Supporting RFI/RFQ/RFP efforts by evaluating current production capabilities to develop a proposed fabrication plan
    • Reading and interpreting part drawings to translate into technical work instruction
    • Conceptualizing design of supporting fixturing and tooling
    • Evaluating, dispositioning, and managing the repair of parts after a production anomaly
    • Manufacturing process sustainment ensuring all program requirements are satisfied
    • Mentor junior employees in daily job functions
    • Interfacing with other functional and support departments as required
  • Support Machine Sustainment tasks including:
    • Root cause analysis after a machine failure
    • Coordination of planned and unplanned maintenance tasks
    • Preparing capital expenditure proposals
    • Commissioning of new machines and integration of new machines into manufacturing processes
  • Support Process Improvement
    • Support department-level process improvement efforts
    • Develop program-level process improvement efforts
  • Internal Research and Development
    • Support IR&D efforts as directed
  • Other duties as required

 

Education Requirements: 

  • BS in Materials Science, Physics, or Mechanical Engineering preferred
  • Other Engineering disciplines considered

 

Experience Required: 

  • 5+ years of engineering experience required
  • Experience with 3d modeling software and drawing creation required
  • Optics experience preferred

 

EHS/Environmental Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate, listen to and interpret instructions, operate tools and/or machinery with hands and arms and remain stationary for extended periods of the time.  The employee will use protective equipment to work with chemicals, move between work stations, reach and replace equipment, and move items weighing up to 25 lbs.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
