Job description
Are you ready to lead the development of spaceflight electrical systems that will redefine the boundaries of space exploration? Lunar Outpost Oceania is seeking a talented and experienced Lead Electrical Engineer to drive the design, development, and integration of advanced electronics for our lunar surface mobility platforms and in-situ resource utilisation technologies. In this role, you will lead a team of engineers delivering cutting edge hardware for robotic systems designed to operate in some of the harshest environments known to humankind.
You will play a critical role in advancing mission critical subsystems and guiding electrical designs from concept to flight, shaping the future of space mobility.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead a team of electrical engineers in the design, development, and testing of electronic systems for lunar robotics and spaceflight applications.
- Oversee the design and development of power systems, control circuitry, sensor integration, and data acquisition systems.
- Guide the architecture and development of circuit boards (PCBs) for power regulation, communication, and motor control.
- Manage full electrical hardware lifecycle including requirements definition, design reviews, prototyping, testing, and spaceflight qualification.
- Drive cross-functional collaboration with mechanical, software, and systems engineers to ensure seamless integration of electrical subsystems within spacecraft and robotics platforms.
- Develop and oversee EMI/EMC and radiation mitigation strategies suitable for lunar and deep space environments.
- Lead efforts for hardware testing, validation, and qualification including thermal vacuum, vibration, and environmental compliance.
- Oversee relationships with external vendors for PCB fabrication, component sourcing, and manufacturing of circuit card assemblies.
- Create and maintain detailed technical documentation including schematics, design justifications, interface definitions, and qualification test plans.
- Mentor junior engineers and act as a technical authority for electrical design, troubleshooting, and integration issues.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related discipline (or higher qualification).
- 5+ years of hands-on experience designing and delivering electrical hardware, preferably in aerospace, robotics, medical or other mission critical environments.
- Proven leadership experience managing engineering teams or technical project teams.
- Expert in PCB and circuit design, including analogue, digital, and power electronics.
- Deep understanding of electronic power systems, including power distribution, regulation, and battery systems.
- Demonstrated experience with electrical system testing and qualification, including EMI/EMC and radiation considerations.
- Familiarity with circuit card assembly processes and design for manufacture principles.
- Experience working with relevant tools such as Altium Designer or similar ECAD software.
- Strong communication and project management skills, with a demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams.
- Must be capable of attaining NV1 Baseline security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the aerospace or space robotics industry.
- Background in startup environments or small team leadership.
- Experience with radiation hardened design and upset mitigation strategies.
- Familiarity with standards such as IPC-2221, ECSS, or NASA EEE-INST-002.
- Understanding of systems engineering principles and hardware-software integration.
