Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA) Design Engineer for a hands-on circuit design and test role, focused on developing, validating, and optimizing high-reliability electronic hardware. This individual will be a key contributor to York’s Electrical Engineering team, a collaborative and dynamic group developing innovative electronics for spacecraft and ground systems. York is a young and growing company that provides fantastic opportunity for ambitious talent to help form the processes, culture, and technical direction of the company.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design and develop cost-effective, high-performance PCBAs for spacecraft systems.
- Ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability, testability, and cost-efficiency while maintaining reliability and functional integrity.
- Collaborate across engineering, manufacturing, and test teams to ensure seamless transition from design to production.
- Create and maintain detailed design documentation: schematics, Gerbers, BOMs, ICDs, and test plans.
- Select components based on performance, radiation tolerance, reliability, cost, availability, and environmental suitability.
- Conduct testing and simulations to validate designs under various conditions (e.g., extreme conditioning, thermal, vibration, shock).
- Lead design troubleshooting and root cause investigations during prototyping, test, and production phases.
- Stay current with industry trends and continuously improve design processes and tools.
- Provide technical expertise, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Physics.
- 4+ years of experience in electrical system design and/or test.
- Extensive experience with Altium Designer or similar ECAD tool (e.g., OrCAD, Mentor Graphics).
- Experience in schematic capture, layout, and manufacturing documentation generation.
- Knowledge of design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for test (DFT).
- Experience with complete product development cycle, from design through release.
- Expertise in PCB assembly, manufacturing, and procurement.
- Understanding of space environment: Radiation, surface charging, thermal dissipation, outgassing, etc.
- Familiarity with in-circuit and functional test strategies.
- Experience with lab validation tools: oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, electronic loads, power analyzers, etc.
- Expertise in high-speed digital, analog, and mixed-signal design.
- Simulation experience (e.g., HyperLynx, SIwave, SPICE, PI/SI tools).
- Design experience with interfaces such as Ethernet, SERDES DDR, USB, UART, I2C, and SPI.
- Experience with power regulation (linear and switching).
- Strong problem-solving and debugging skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative “small-team” culture, and environment.
- Proven ability to work independently, take ownership of tasks, and drive them to completion with minimal oversight.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 6+ years of experience in electrical system design and/or test.
- Experience in power supply, motor drivers, and instrumentation design.
- Experience with radiation effects on electronic components (TID, SEE, SEL) and electronic risk mitigation for spaceflight.
- Radio Frequency design, testing, and compliance experience.
- Background in signal and power integrity analysis and interpretation for design optimization.
- Experience in precision timing, processor architectures, and system-level design.
- Experience organizing, tracking, and deriving requirements and test plans.
- EMI and EMC analysis and test and experience.
- Experience with configuration management, including use of product data management (PDM) systems and version control software to manage design data, revisions, and product baselines.
