The Boeing Defense, Space, and Security (BDS), Space, Intelligence & Weapon Systems (SI&WS) division, is seeking a Lead GPS Systems Engineer. This position will support the Global Positioning System (GPS) sustainment program located in Colorado Springs, CO. The successful candidate will serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the GPS IIF satellites, providing expertise in the design and sustainment of Bus and Payload components, software and associated documentation. This role will involve ensuring the integrity and compliance of processes and various technical documents, including Interface Control Documents (ICDs), specifications, configuration management plans, and operational handbooks, among others.

GPS is a satellite-based radio-navigation system owned by the United States government and operated by the United States Space Force, is the world's largest military satellite constellation and is the world's only global utility. GPS provides position, navigation, and timing data to military and civilian users globally with countless applications and an unlimited number of users. Boeing has over 30 year's of history in GPS to include achieving full system capability in 1995. The current Boeing team supports the US Space Force by sustaining and monitoring the health and capabilities of the 12 GPS Block IIF satellites in the GPS constellation launched from 2010 to 2016. The Boeing GPS sustainment team also provides support to its US Space Force customer with reports and expertise on all aspects of the GPS system. Sustainment efforts will continue through the life of the Block IIF satellites, with a design life expectancy of 2031 and beyond. The program is currently operating under a 10-year sustainment contract, from 2022 to 2031.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the GPS IIF satellites, providing guidance and expertise on all associated documentation

  • Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of critical technical documents, including but not limited to ICDs, specifications, configuration management plans, and operational handbooks

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the Enterprise Request for Change (RFC) Process and maintain relevant tracking and monitoring systems

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure contract compliance and provide subject matter expertise in systems engineering and requirements

  • Review and provide input for Orbital Operations Handbook (OOH) documentation changes, ensuring alignment with all subsystems and documentation

  • Support the Configuration Management and Data Management (CM/DM) processes, including the development and maintenance of process, procedure and instruction documentation

  • Manage and administer tools and systems used for documentation and configuration management, ensuring effective access and usability for team members

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location.

This position requires an active U.S. Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active) 

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science

  • 10 years or more of experience in systems engineering, particularly in the aerospace or defense industry

  • Prior experience in space systems engineering, particularly with satellite systems

  • Experience in requirements verification and validation (V&V) processes

  • Strong understanding of system performance requirements and integration of technical parameters

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Knowledge of GPS systems and satellite operations

  • Previous experience in a role that involved collaboration with cross-functional teams

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.  


Summary pay range: $119,850 - $162,150
