NDE SPECIALIST, COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT)

The CT NDE function provides quality control, serves as a diagnostic tool, performs failure analysis, and protects product reliability. While this CT Level II inspector position sits within the Starlink Reliability group, they will work alongside both production and NDE engineering teams to support every program at SpaceX, including Starship. This is a unique opportunity to work on cutting edge technology such as PCB and Silicon Packaging insourcing efforts.

We are looking for a talented individual to not only perform CT scans and data evaluation at a high-level but also to closely interface with the NDE and Engineering teams on new inspection requirements, data interpretation, and failure analysis. This successful individual should demonstrate intellectual curiosity, proven innovation, fast learning of advanced software, a collaborative work ethic, and excellent communication skills being able to discuss with the customer the confidence and limitations of any inspection when not following an established process. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build relationships with cross-functional groups as both partners and customers
  • Perform NDE Operations technical support:
    • Coordinate/conduct system level operations maintenance and support definition
    • Provide/own production cell technical oversight including troubleshooting and complex problem-solving of vendor related equipment issues and associated relationships
    • Lead continuous improvement of inspection precision/repeatability, reliability, and efficiency
    • Perform inspections 10-30% of time to stay current with operations, identify process improvement opportunities, and pair with OJT time for trainees
  • Drive technician qualification and certification:
    • Support and conduct training
    • Administer general and specific written and practical exams
  • Contribute to inspection technology development with proper guidance:
    • Collaborate with partners on systems and tooling selection
    • Support market research and investigation
    • Perform system testing and trials
    • Perform system evaluation and qualification including probability of detection studies
    • Support PDR/CDR forums with good oral, written, and presentation skills
  • Support inspection process development and manufacturing process feedback:
    • Understand engineering requirements (engineering drawing interpretation and engineering specifications)
    • Drive part specific technique development, testing, qualification, documentation, and deployment
    • Document processes
  • Own basic root cause/corrective action processes to help drive containments and customer questions to closure utilizing problem solving tools and techniques

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • 4+ years of experience working with NDE methodologies as a certified level II or III in computed tomography (CT)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Hold certification in additional NDE methodologies besides CT
  • Experience in engineering, production, or manufacturing
  • Experience with quality systems (ISO 9000/AS9100/NADCAP)
  • Knowledge of quality processes (approvals, quality planning, first article inspections, etc.)
  • Expertise interpreting 2D engineering drawings and model drawings
  • Knowledge of AMS, AWS/ASME, ASTM, NASA 5009 standards, etc.
  • Proficient computer skills; knowledge of coding (SQL, Python, etc.), work order planning, and test plans
  • Degree in a STEM-related subject area

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to work overtime and weekends as needed
  • Ability to travel – up to 25%
