Where the impossible becomes possible, and every day is an opportunity to learn and get one step closer to knowing the unknown. Join us on our mission to expand humanity’s presence in space.
Redwire is opening a new office in Warsaw, Poland and we have a current opportunity for a Structural and Thermal Engineer. With many exciting opportunities on the horizon, Redwire is eagerly looking for your curiosity, passion for space, talent, and experience to help us Build Above.
Job description
As a Structural and Thermal engineer for Redwire Poland, you are responsible for a project’s structural and thermal integrity, with projects ranging from small, handheld experiments to large docking mechanisms. You work closely together with the Lead Systems engineer and Mechanical Integration engineer to ensure all structural and thermal requirements are met, also taking the lead in the preparation, execution, and reporting of environmental tests. Testing, modeling & analysis, and technical writing are part and parcel of the work you are prepared to do on a day-to-day basis.
As a structural engineer you are responsible for the structural integrity of the project you are working on. The items you are analyzing range from small handheld experiments to large rack sized experiments for the international space station and from small subsystems for various space applications to complete satellites and docking mechanisms.
You work closely together with systems engineers to ensure that the product meets all structural requirements. When necessary, you translate the obtained results in dedicated recommendations to improve the mechanical design from a structural point of view, this in close collaboration with the mechanical design team.
Your core task is to verify structures against various launch and orbital loads via simple hand calculations/ spreadsheets and FEMAP Nastran. The performed analysis must be properly documented via structural analysis and trade-off reports. The structural engineer is responsible for the management of the created FEM models to ensure traceability of the various performed analysis and calculations.
Further, you will take the lead in the preparation, execution, and reporting of structural tests. You correlate the test results with your analysis models and provide support in finding root causes when issues arise during testing.
You have a good attitude towards report writing and you are able to work in a structured manner, with a clear focus to get issues resolved in a cooperative spirit within a given time.
Desired skills/ experience/ knowledge
- You have a Master degree in a structural engineering related field (mechanics, mechatronics, aerospace…)
- A minimum of 5 years of working experience as a structural engineer with FEMAP Nastran or similar is mandatory
- A thorough understanding of failure criteria and - modes and their relation to various material allowables is required
- A good understanding of structural dynamics (Eigenmodes, sine vibration, random vibration…)
- A good understanding of bolted joints is required
- Hands-on experience with structural testing (static, vibration, shock) mandatory
- Knowledge on honeycomb panels is an asset
- A good knowledge of Microsoft office, in particular Microsoft word and Excel
- Knowledge of a programming language (VBA, Python, MATLAB) is an asset
- Fluency in English (speaking and writing) is an absolute must.
- We are looking for someone who is proactive, creative, enthusiastic, result-oriented, and a team player.
- Good communication skills, able to discuss directly with customers and finding good technical solutions while maintaining control over schedule and budget constraints.
- Passion for space. The space business is very demanding, with very specific analysis and test methods.
