CAPTAIN, DRAGON VESSEL (MARINE OPERATIONS) 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead all aspects of safe operation, navigation, standards, and crew management of SpaceX’s fleet of Dragon Capsule Recovery Vessels, Megan and Shannon, operating in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf of Mexico
  • Create and sustain an environment that integrates vessel crew and recovery specialists
  • Lead all planning related to voyage planning, day-to-day offshore vessel operations, and the safety of all personnel onboard; primarily support recovery missions and other tasks as necessary
  • Oversee administrative reports and logbooks according to regulation and standards ensuring ship-wide compliance with appropriate programs and standards
  • Adopt and adhere to SpaceX procedures for coordination, collaboration, and communication in relation to vessel management
  • Manage assigned crew members, perform evaluations, ensure proper training requirements are met, and develop team to meet needs of SpaceX
  • Manage crew and vessel; actively engage/communicate at a modest level during off-hitch periods and demonstrate extreme ownership and exceptional leadership skills

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • 3+ years of experience in an off-shore captain role, 100GRT+ vessels
  • Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC): 200GRT Master upon Oceans
  • Valid USCG Medical Certification

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 500 Ton Master upon Oceans MMC, STCW II/2
  • Third Mate Unlimited Tonnage MMC, STCW II/1
  • 5+ years of experience in an off-shore captain role
  • 3+ years of professional experience working in a role that deals with examinations or licensing-efforts with US Coast Guard (USCG) and/or American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) regulations
  • Knowledge of vessel management systems, safety management systems, and regulatory programs such as OPA 90, MARPOL, ABS, etc
  • Proficient in computer-based tasks that include, but not limited to, management processes and contributing toward team collaboration

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to pass Air Force background check for Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg
  • Willing to work outdoors and in maritime environments
  • Ability to pass relevant USCG examinations, federal facility background checks, re-certifications, and chemical testing
  • Position requires a Merchant Mariner credential, which includes pre-employment and random drug testing in accordance with 46 CFR 16 and 49 CFR 40
  • Must be willing to travel to other SpaceX locations as necessary – up to 50%
  • Must be willing to work a 50-hour work week which can vary depending on site operational needs, flexibility is required

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:   

Pay range:   

Captain/Level 1 - $68,640.00 annual salary + $500.00 per day worked

Captain/Level 2 - $68,640.00 annual salary + $575.00 per day worked

Captain/Level 3 - $68,640.00 annual salary + $650.00 per day worked

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX. ITAR REQUIREMENTS:

  • To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
