Our team and mission

This position is based at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) - Noordwijk, Netherlands

 

We are the FORUM team at ESA, responsible for the implementation of the Far-infrared Outgoing Radiation Understanding and Monitoring (FORUM) mission. Our mission aims to provide critical data on how Earth's atmosphere traps and emits longwave radiation, which is essential for improving climate models. Currently, our focus is on procuring the satellite payload and finalizing the Critical Design Review (CDR) by the end of 2024.

 

Our team is a dynamic group of experts, including optical, thermal, and mechanical engineers, alongside dedicated project managers, all collaborating within the Earth Observation Projects Department. Our goal is to successfully deliver the FORUM satellite, with launch planned for 2027. By 2025, we will enter the integration phase, assembling and testing the payload.
We are looking forward to expanding our team with a student to help us fully model the instrument using specialized simulation tools, contributing to this exciting phase of the project.

Topic of the internship: Simulation and Performance Analysis of the FORUM Satellite Payload

 

As part of the Earth Observation Projects Department, you will work within the payload section of the FORUM mission, which aims to improve our understanding of Earth's radiation budget and its impact on climate. Your primary task will be to assist the team in simulating the performance of the payload and ensuring it meets the main mission objectives. This involves using advanced simulation tools to model the instrument's behavior, predict its performance in orbit, and validate key parameters that are critical to the success of the mission.

You will collaborate closely with engineers and scientists specialized in optics, thermal analysis, and mechanical design, giving you the opportunity to deepen your understanding of satellite instrumentation and space science. You will be expected to contribute to discussions, participate in technical reviews, and take an active role in problem-solving.

 

The internship will offer you hands-on experience with the full modeling and testing life cycle of a satellite instrument, including the integration and test phases planned for 2025. You will also have the chance to engage in technical analysis, learning how to balance theoretical modeling with real-world engineering challenges.

Education

You must be a university student, preferably in your final or second-to-last year of a university course at Master’s level and you need to remain enrolled at your University for the entire duration of the internship.

Additional requirements

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

 

Requirements:

  • Academic Background: Currently pursuing a degree in engineering or a related field (e.g., aerospace, mechanical, or optical engineering). A focus on space technology or Earth observation is a plus;
  • Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with satellite systems and payload optical technologies. Knowledge and background in optical engineering would be an asset;
  • Software Skills: Proficiency in simulation tools such as MATLAB, or other relevant modeling software. Experience with optical simulation tools is a bonus;
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to analyze technical challenges, identify solutions, and simulate system performance to meet mission requirements;
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. Capable of preparing technical reports and presenting findings effectively;
  • Team Player: Willingness to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team, exchange knowledge, and contribute actively to discussions;
  • Proactive Attitude: Eager to take initiative, seek learning opportunities, and adapt to a dynamic work environment;
  • Attention to Detail: Capable of managing complex technical documentation and ensuring accuracy in all aspects of project simulation and reporting.
