Job description
Welcome to Planet. We believe in using space to help life on Earth.
Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history. This constellation delivers an unprecedented dataset of empirical information via a revolutionary cloud-based platform to authoritative figures in commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. We are both a space company and data company all rolled into one.
Customers and users across the globe use Planet's data to develop new technologies, drive revenue, power research, and solve our world’s toughest obstacles.
As we control every component of hardware design, manufacturing, data processing, and software engineering, our office is a truly inspiring mix of experts from a variety of domains.
We have a people-centric approach toward culture and community and we strive to iterate in a way that puts our team members first and prepares our company for growth. Join Planet and be a part of our mission to change the way people see the world.
Planet is a global company with employees working remotely world wide and joining us from offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and The Netherlands.
About the Role:
Advances in data fusion for satellite-based analysis ready water use efficiency and irrigation scheduling products.
Changing precipitation patterns, droughts of increasing duration and severity, growing demand for food have significant implications on agricultural management practices, fostering the need for high performance crop monitoring systems to ensure sustainable and increased productivity. Therefore, our customers have clearly identified the need of product bundles to inform about the biomass production and monitor on-going and rapidly-changing environmental stresses such as agricultural drought. Planet’s satellite constellations, with very high spatial resolution, frequent revisit and the capability to document the within-field spatial variability, are therefore critical to characterize and monitor the different components of agricultural ecosystems and play a key role in decision support systems. This internship is an opportunity to help further develop Planet analysis ready products and solutions for agriculture.
The project is based on the use of current Planet’s imagery and Planetary Variables (i.e. Fusion Leat Area index, Land Surface Temperature, Soil Water Content and Crop Biomass) to characterize the surface energy, water and carbon budgets of croplands, detect environmental stresses and derive water use efficiency and irrigation needs. Planet conducts applied research to develop innovative imagery products for various applications using multi-sensor observations and engages with the scientific community to advance remote sensing science. The intern will join the Agriculture pod in partnership with the Analytics and Co-development and the Research Imaging Science and Experimentation (RISE) teams.
Join us in our mission to develop differentiated next generation satellite products for agriculture with the ambition to provide timely, usable, and actionable insights from multi-source satellite observations.
This is a full-time internship and is based in our Haarlem office 3 days per week.
