Job description

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher position to work with Dr. Sarah Kendrew and collaborators on the study of galaxy evolution at high redshifts with the James Webb Space Telescope. The research will be based on near- and mid-infrared deep imaging data from several JWST programs, including the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) and its extension to the red (MIDIS-red), providing a wide range of exciting scientific projects – from the characterization of galaxies at cosmic noon to the study of star formation histories of galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization, and much more. The position will require data reduction work of MIRI deep imaging data, as well as high-level scientific analysis, such as morphological studies, photometric redshift modeling, or SED fitting; projects may additionally include NIRCam data reduction and analysis in parallel fields.  Part of the time may be available for professional development, independent research or new projects in related areas. The nominal start date is expected to be in Spring/Summer 2025, but other dates are negotiable (including earlier). The initial appointment is for two years, with an expected renewal to a 3rd year subject to satisfactory performance.

STScI, located on Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, offers an excellent benefit package, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. STScI’s pay is commensurate to the year of Ph.D.  Explore our Benefits!

Any questions about the position should be directed to skendrew@stsci.edu.

Applicants shall hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy, Physics, or related fields at the start of the position. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable: (a) data reduction of HST or JWST imaging data; (b) photometric redshifts at high-z; (c) studies of galaxy evolution at intermediate or high-redshift, including SED fitting; (d) AGN/galaxy co-evolution. In addition, applicants should have intermediate-level Python experience (or higher); and good communication, collaboration and presentation skills. More important is the willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, and work independently to bring these projects to fruition.

Applicants are requested to complete an on-line application through:  https://stsci.slideroom.com/#/permalink/program/81687

The following materials will be requested in PDF format: a brief cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and a concise (1-3 page) statement of research interests, accomplishments, and relevant technical experience.  Complete applications received by November 25th, 2024 will receive full consideration. Also, applicants must arrange for three confidential letters of reference. Reference letters must be submitted by the same date via the on-line application system.
