Job description

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a postdoctoral position to work with Eddie Schlafly.  The successful applicant will create the deepest ever catalogs of sources from WISE observations, coadding images taken over the full lifetime of the WISE mission.  They will then use these deep WISE catalogs to measure the density of galaxies out to a redshift of two, and correlate this density with maps of CMB lensing to measure the growth of structure.  This should provide some of the tightest constraints on the amplitude of structure over redshifts 1 < z < 2.  The appointment is for three years, with a nominal start date of summer/fall 2025.

We seek candidates with strong interest in image reduction and large scale structure analysis who will lead the effort.  Also important is the willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, create scientific publications, and work independently to bring these projects to fruition.  The successful applicant will collaborate with experts at Waterloo, NOIRLab, and Berkeley.  Funding is available for collaborative visits to further the project.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy, Physics, or related fields at the start of the post-doctoral researcher position.  Research experience in image analysis, galaxy clustering, and CMB lensing is desirable.

The successful applicant will benefit from a stimulating work environment rich in colloquia, journal clubs, symposia, and learning opportunities related to the missions supported by STScI (HST, JWST, Roman).  STScI also features close ties with neighboring Johns Hopkins University.  STScI offers an excellent benefit package (including comprehensive healthcare and paid parental leave) and relocation assistance. STScI’s pay for postdoctoral researchers is commensurate to the year of Ph.D. Range $74,258-$84,570.

Prospective applicants should ONLY complete an online application through: https://stsci.slideroom.com/#/permalink/program/82196

The following materials are requested in a single PDF file: a brief cover letter detailing your research interests and relevant expertise, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and a summary of previous and current research (limited to 3 pages). Complete applications received by January 17, 2025, will receive full consideration. Applicants should arrange for three confidential letters of reference to be submitted by January 17, 2025, via the online application system.

Questions about the position can be addressed to eschlafly@stsci.edu.  Questions regarding the application process can be sent directly to careers@stsci.edu. STScI sees the diversity of our staff as a strategic priority in our desire to create a first-rate scientific community.
