Intuitive Machines is an innovative and cutting-edge space company making cislunar space accessible to both public and private customers. Our mission is to further science and exploration, communications, and economic progress from the Earth to the Moon and beyond. With the first commercial lunar landing in history, multiple NASA lunar missions in development, and additional private missions on our manifest, we pride ourselves in supporting our customers and the nation in paving the way to return humans to the surface of the Moon. Our world-class team includes experts in all aspects of spacecraft subsystems design, development, and test, on-orbit operations, and safety.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Avionics Deputy Manager to join our team. In this senior-level role, you will partner with the Avionics Manager to lead the design, development, and implementation of avionics systems for our space missions. You will work at the heart of the Avionics/Electrical Engineering group, ensuring the successful delivery of high-performance, reliable avionics systems for spaceflight.
This position requires a deep understanding of avionics design, electrical engineering, and systems integration. You will mentor a talented engineering team, collaborate with cross-functional groups, and contribute to strategic decision-making to support mission success.
Key Responsibilities:
- Partner with the Avionics Manager to lead the Avionics/Electrical Engineering group in the design, development, and integration of avionics systems for spaceflight hardware.
- Oversee the design and architecture of complex avionics systems, including guidance, navigation, and control (GNC), power distribution, communication, and telemetry.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure avionics systems meet mission requirements, are fully integrated, and are space-rated.
- Drive the development and verification of avionics hardware and software, ensuring compliance with aerospace standards and reliability in the extreme conditions of space.
- Support the Avionics Manager in setting technical direction, reviewing designs, and making critical engineering decisions to meet performance and safety objectives.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to a team of avionics engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure rigorous testing and validation processes, including environmental testing, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, and mission simulations, to verify system performance and safety.
- Lead and participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and failure analysis to ensure successful outcomes for space missions.
- Contribute to the development of avionics systems roadmaps, including technology upgrades and future capabilities for space exploration missions.
- Ensure documentation and designs meet both internal standards and external regulatory requirements (NASA, ESA, or equivalent).
Remote candidates will be given time to relocate but must relocate to Houston Texas.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10+ years of experience in avionics or electrical engineering, with a focus on aerospace or space systems. Considerations will be made for talent based on background.
- Deep expertise in the design, development, and testing of avionics systems for space applications.
- Strong knowledge of space-rated hardware, including power systems, communication systems, and guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) systems.
- Experience leading engineering teams and collaborating with cross-functional groups to deliver high-performance systems.
- Proficiency with electrical and avionics design tools, simulations, and hardware development processes.
- Thorough understanding of space environment constraints such as radiation, thermal cycling, and vacuum conditions, and their impact on avionics systems.
- Experience working with aerospace standards and regulatory requirements (NASA, ESA, or equivalent).
- Strong problem-solving, leadership, and decision-making skills with a focus on technical rigor and mission success.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with spacecraft avionics systems, including satellite or space vehicle hardware.
- Familiarity with mission-critical system development for space exploration.
- Knowledge of system integration practices, failure modes analysis, and reliability engineering in aerospace.
- Experience working in project/program budgets
- Experience scheduling and organizing project controls.
