Job description

The Space Algorithms group concentrates on developing and implementing novel algorithms for solving trailblazing problems in the developing new space economy. These include, but are not limited to, GNC algorithms, low-thrust and impulsive trajectory optimization, cislunar trajectory design, and machine learning applications in the space domain.

Your job will be to innovate upon existing capabilities, assimilate current research, and implement state-of-the-art algorithms. You will assess mission concepts, define requirements, and apply your mathematical skills and knowledge to design, verify, and validate robust solutions. This fundamentally involves building out our in-house astrodynamics simulation capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and validate algorithmic solutions which are highly reliable and scalable
  • Research and identify useful algorithms for challenging space-based applications
  • Optimize the runtime performance of existing implementations
  • Extend the existing algorithmic suite for low-thrust trajectory optimization
  • Develop benchmarks and extensive testing programs for cislunar trajectory design
  • Contribute to team discussions, providing insight and feedback to collectively drive innovation across several related projects

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree with 2+ years of professional experience, PhD degree or is an active PhD candidate in Computational Physics, Applied Mathematics, Astrodynamics or a related field
  • Strong programming skills in Python and/or C++
  • Strong understanding of orbital mechanics
  • Experience implementing, testing, and validating optimization algorithms
  • Experience with data analysis, data engineering, and data exploration techniques
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking skills, and strong engineering fundamentals
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Strong mathematical background in linear algebra, probability, numerical/statistical analysis, and/or robotics/control
  • Experience with one or more of the following: nonlinear optimization, uncertainty quantification, numerical optimization methods, computationally intensive simulations
  • Experience in trajectory optimization and/or mission planning applications
  • Experience integrating algorithms into existing systems and applications and deploying them to production while maintaining reliability, performance, and scalability
  • Ability to work autonomously and search for solutions with minimal direct supervision
ITAR Requirements:
  • This position may include access to technology and/or software source code that is subject to U.S. export controls. To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

Benefits

  • Health Insurance: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Retirement Plans: Access to a 401(k) plan.
  • Paid Time Off: Generous vacation days, personal days, and holidays to ensure you have time to recharge.
  • Professional Development: Opportunities for ongoing training, workshops, and courses to advance your skills and career growth.
  • Team Building Activities: Regular social events, team outings, and company-sponsored activities to foster a positive work environment.
  • Diverse and Inclusive Culture: A commitment to diversity and inclusion, with initiatives to support a welcoming and equitable work environment.
