This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.

The Data Management Division is hiring a Full-Stack Senior Software Engineer to help advance our state-of-the-art, astronomical data archive, the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST). MAST is the public data archive for more than 20 missions spanning more than 50 years, including HST, JWST, Roman, GALEX, PanSTARRS, Kepler, K2, and TESS. This is full-stack software engineer position:  the majority of your workload will be in designing, developing, maintaining, and deploying JavaScript and Python applications with a specific emphasis on cloud-based performance of those tools.

Responsibilities include:

  • Designing, developing, and maintaining cutting-edge research tools optimized to support the upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, which will operate in a Jupyter environment on AWS Cloud
  • Collaborating with and providing technical guidance to other engineers and astronomers in MAST and at STScI
  • Decomposing high-level requirements into actionable, concise tasks required for implementation through software development life cycle phases into a production environment

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s in Computer Science, or a related field.  A minimum expertise level of 8+ years working as a full-stack software engineer is expected. No prior experience in astronomy or physics is required for this position.

  • Considerable experience building Python- and/or JavaScript-based applications
  • Excellent practical, hands-on working knowledge of Python and JavaScript
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD tools, like Jenkins or GitLab CI/CD
  • Some practical experience working on applications running on Cloud, preferably on AWS
  • Demonstrated consistent usage of a modern source code management tool, like GitHub, Gitlab, Bitbucket
  • Excels working in a team environment to collaboratively work on projects
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to deliver objectives on-time on a regular cadence
  • Experience refining larger scoped items into smaller, cohesive steps

Salary range is $132k - $145k. Compensation is commensurate with education and experience. Our excellent benefits include:
