The Satellite Developer Experience (SatDevEx) team is proud in their primary mission to have the backs of Spire software engineers and customers; we make their lives easier by giving them the tools to effectively test and quickly deploy their software in space.  

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Software Engineer for the SatDevEx team to architect, design, develop, and maintain these tools and services. You will have a view into the satellite software stack, and involving yourself in a wide breadth of applications, including satellite software, ground and mission software, testing suites, cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, telemetry analysis and monitoring. You will also work closely to other business units, with the goal of optimizing their development experience as much as possible.

Scope of the role:   

  • Own the design, implementation, testing, and operation of tools and services intended to provide software developers and customers the ability to test and deploy software easily onto satellites. 
  • Maintain and scale tooling and services to match the growth of the company and the ever-increasing heterogeneity of satellites and missions. 
  • Interface with a multitude of engineers from various concerns/disciplines in order to develop testing and deployment solutions that speed up their ability to develop and deploy software, as well as reduce their friction and cognitive load. 
  • Design next-generation test apparatus for highly resilient and performant satellite systems with, for example, the ability to simulate software interactions between many satellites.  

 

Required Qualifications:   

  • Highly collaborative team player who values shared code ownership, testing, documentation, code reviews, and supporting customers, both internal and external.  
  • Demonstrating clear and effective communication skills crucial for collaborating with team members, documenting requirements and design, and conveying technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.  
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, set realistic estimations, and manage their time effectively.  
  • Ability to lead a project, establish schedules and roadmaps, prioritize features, and track and guide fellow team members in that work. 
  • 4+ years of working experience in software engineering.  
  • Computer science degree or equivalent work experience.  
  • Experience with one or more programming languages out of: Python, Rust, C/C++.  
  • Experience with Linux (shell scripting, package management, etc.) and build systems (e.g. Makefile, waf) 
  • Experience owning full-lifecycle software development: requirement gathering, development, testing, delivery, monitoring, and incident response.  
  • Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems (e.g. Git)  
  • Hands-on DevOps experience. Familiarity with services and tools like AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, Github Actions, Argo CD, etc.   

 

Preferred Qualifications:   

  • Experience with network protocols, data management and security best practices.  
  • Experience with setting up a computational cluster.  
  • Experience with building a fully automated test and deployment system (CI/CD) from the ground up. 
  • Experience in embedded software development, embedded operating systems, build systems (Yocto, Bitbake), and driver development. 
  • Experience with Hardware-In-The-Loop testing and sensor/peripheral integration.    
  • Experience in technical documentation (requirements, technical specifications, APIs, research papers, etc.) 
  • Demonstrated ability to see the big picture, understand where technology and industry is heading, and marrying innovation with customer or company needs.  
  • Demonstrated history of collaborating with multiple teams/disciplines to produce mutually agreeable solutions and resolutions to technical issues.  

 

Spire operates a hybrid work model, and this position will require you to work a minimum of three days per week in office.
