Job description

Sierra Space Careers: Dare to Dream

We honor those that are not afraid to dream big dreams, those that tenaciously chase their dreams even when others say it cannot be done, those that achieve big dreams and change everything. Those are Dreams Worth Chasing.

At Sierra Space we envision a future where humanity lives and works in space, on moons, and on distant planets. Our mission isn’t restricted to the few, instead we see a future where all people can choose to live, work, discover and explore beyond our planet. Our company is building a platform in space to benefit life on Earth and together we will alter the course of humanity.

We have a bold mission. We are a bold company. Together, we are an extraordinary team.

About the Role

Sierra Space is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Manufacturing Engineering Intern to join our high-performance team. As an intern, you will gain hands-on experience in various aspects of manufacturing engineering, including process development, production optimization, and quality control for aerospace systems. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge projects and develop practical skills in a real-world manufacturing environment.

Our Co-ops have the unique experience of getting both mentoring and coaching while working side by side with recognized industry experts on real-world assignments directly related to their field of study. Bring your knowledge and desire to learn, and we will provide the experience. Co-op’s are full time, 40 hour a week commitments and typically span an entire semester, with the possibility of starting the summer before (Fall Co-op) or extending into the summer after (Spring Co-op).

As a Manufacturing Engineering Intern, you'll ask questions, get involved, bring your ideas, be part of an actual project team, attend planning meetings, complete assignments as tasked by your team, absorb and learn from your team and apply that learning to projects assigned. You'll have the opportunity to learn fundamental business processes and procedures, build your technical foundation through practice and mentorship, and participate in an in-depth program built by our University Recruiting team, that includes cross-functional workshops and meeting with leadership to gain understanding of the business and Sierra Space culture.

Key Responsibilities:

Tooling Design

  • Assist in designing and developing specialized tools, jigs, and fixtures for the manufacturing and assembly of aerospace components and systems

  • Collaborate with manufacturing and design engineers to understand specific manufacturing requirements and constraints

  • Participate in feasibility studies and provide recommendations for tooling solutions that enhance manufacturing efficiency and quality

  • Utilize CAD software to create detailed tool designs, including 3D models, drawings, and specifications

  • Join design reviews with cross-functional teams to ensure tool designs meet project requirements and standards

  • Liaise with suppliers and vendors to select and procure tooling components and materials

  • Help develop and maintain comprehensive tooling documentation, including design files, drawings, and specifications

  • Support manufacturing and assembly teams in the implementation and use of specialized tools and fixtures

  • Assist in tooling validation and verification activities to ensure tool performance and functionality

  • Collaborate with technicians and operators, providing training and guidance on the use of specialized tools and fixtures

  • Stay current with advancements in tool design and manufacturing technologies, applying relevant knowledge to ongoing projects

  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations in all tool design and manufacturing activities

Solar

  • Assist with new product introduction (NPI) builds across all Solar work centers, performing process development, validation, and transition to production on extremely aggressive timelines

  • Write process plan and standard procedures for a variety of Solar products

  • Work with tooling team to design custom fixtures for the Surface Mount Technology (SMT) line and Solar Array integration

  • Work with mentor to triage non-conforming product and drive resolution and preventative action implementation

  • Own high-impact continuous improvement projects for yield, rate, and cost of Solar Array products

  • Provide solutions to streamline space-grade circuit board assembly and test processes

  • Facilitate a close relationship with the engineering team during design, build, and test to provide design feedback
