Job description
The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher position to work with Dr. Svea Hernandez and Dr. Linda Smith, and a team of international collaborators on observational studies of stellar populations, the multi-phase interstellar medium and chemical evolution of nearby star-forming galaxies. The project will include analysis and interpretation of UV observations with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and supporting optical ground-based observations. The main goal of the project is to investigate chemical enrichment in nearby galaxies as well as characterize their physical properties. Part of the time may be available for independent research or new projects in related areas. The nominal start date is expected to be in Summer/Fall 2025, but other dates are negotiable. The initial appointment is for two years, with an expected renewal to a 3rd year subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
STScI, located on Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, offers an excellent benefit package, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. STScI’s pay is commensurate to the year of Ph.D. The successful applicant will benefit from the career mentoring program at STScI, interactions with the Johns Hopkins University research staff, and a stimulating work environment rich in colloquia, journal clubs, symposia, and learning opportunities related to the missions supported by STScI (HST, JWST, and Roman).
Any questions about the position should be directed to sveash@stsci.edu.
Applicants shall hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, or related fields at the start of the position. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable: (a) UV/optical spectroscopy; (b) data reduction from space- or ground-based observatories; (c) characterization of stellar populations; (d) interstellar medium studies; (e) chemical evolution of galaxies. Similarly important is the willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, and work independently to bring these projects to fruition.
Applicants are requested to complete an on-line application through: https://stsci.slideroom.com/#/permalink/program/80592/7hpyIsx1FL
The following materials will be requested in PDF format: a brief cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and a concise (1-3 page) statement of research interests, accomplishments, and relevant technical experience. Complete applications received by November 22, 2024, will receive full consideration. Also, applicants must arrange for three confidential letters of reference. Reference letters will be requested at a later stage in the review process.
Questions regarding the application process can be sent directly to careers@stsci.edu.
