Job Description Qualifications:

The Boeing Phantom Works Space team has an exciting opportunity for Fault Management & Systems Autonomy Engineers to join our team located in Kent, WA. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to personally contribute to the development of new first-of-kind space vehicles and missions.

As a senior/lead member of our Guidance Navigation & Controls (GN&C) team, you will join an experienced and mission-focused team of engineers to develop new concepts in mission planning, precision maneuver and fault and autonomy design. We rapidly prototype new concepts then deploy and iterate our designs and systems. As a senior/lead engineer working in this area, you will lead Fault Analysis efforts (FMECA, Fault Tree and Branch Termination, Fault Test Threshold, Persistence, Interference (TPI) Analysis), Fault Contingency, providing inputs to Dynamics and Control simulations and leading Modeling and Mission Analysis. Our development timelines are aggressive, and you will be asked to develop solutions to previously unsolved problems.

In this role, you will work in multidisciplinary teams to bring a concept of operations to fruition in support of our customers’ mission objectives. You will primarily work as a technical lead and will also assist as an individual contributor for key tasks. An ideal candidate has familiarity working Fault Management & Autonomy throughout the total life cycle for a spacecraft. . and has a strong technical background across all spacecraft subsystems with particular depth in Attitude Control Systems (ACS)/Guidance Navigation & Control (GNC), flight software, or spacecraft operations as well as a strong system background spanning both space and ground domains. You will need to be able to dive into broad, minimally-defined design spaces and effectively lead integrated efforts.

Our teams are currently hiring for a broad range of experience levels including; Senior and Lead Level Fault Management & Systems Autonomy Engineers.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Create a fault design framework for a major program

  • Develop system fault tree and develops fault management strategy for mission

  • Understand and contribute to CONOPS development

  • Develop and interpret vehicle states and modes

  • Develop algorithms to implement fault management strategy, including orbit raising techniques in off nominal conditions

  • Develop operational concepts and products, develops interface requirements, and performs verification and validation

  • Perform analyses to evaluate and optimize total system performance to meet customer autonomous operation requirements

  • Resolve technical issues and ensures the spacecraft and system are flight worthy prior to delivery

  • Create tools and techniques to optimize, analyze, and validate performance

  • Develop solutions with cross-functional teams to assure mission success and presenting those findings to customer, chief engineer, and senior management

  • Perform trade studies to meet program requirements

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Top Secret Clearance Post-Start is required

Special Program Access or other Government Access Requirements are mandatory for this position.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science

  • Senior (Level 4) Bachelor’s degree and 9+ years of related work experience or Master’s degree and 7+ years of related work experience or PhD and 4+ years of related work experience (i.e., engineering experience)

  • Lead (Level 5) Bachelor’s degree and 14+ years of related work experience or Master’s degree and 12+ years of related work experience or PhD and 9+ years of related work experience (i.e., engineering experience)

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Active U.S. Security Clearance

  • Experience working in aerospace, defense, or similar high-tech industry

  • Experience in Aerospace Engineering or Electrical Engineering

  • Failure analysis or fault management technical experience

  • Experience developing solutions to complex technical problems

  • Experience working with C/C++

  • Experience working with MATLAB and VBA tool development

Typical Education/Experience: 

(Senior, level 4)

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

(Lead, level 5)

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. 

Summary pay range (Senior, Level 4): $135,150 - $182,850

Summary pay range (Lead, Level 5): $164,050 - $221,950
