Job description

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

We are a diverse team of collaborators, doers, and problem- solvers who are relentlessly committed to a culture of safety. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable space flight. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space and enabling Blue Origin’s vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth.

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

As a Mechanical Engineer you will be part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers to develop mechanical/fluid products for the re-useable launch vehicle. You will engage in all stages of the design cycle including conceptual design, requirements management, system modeling, layout, structural analysis, modeling/drafting, manufacturing, integration, test, and mission support.

You will create engineering documentation including schematics, requirements, design reviews, bills of materials, and other deliverables. You will use 3D CAD programs (Creo), product lifecycle management tools (Windchill), and possibly Finite Element Analysis programs (ANSYS) to design and analyze the system. You will use creative thinking and novel manufacturing solutions to solve sophisticated problems with high pressure, cryogenic, and highly stressed hardware. You will deliver completed designs using ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards along with clear and well documented analysis reports. Following the design efforts, you will lead and participate in component and system level testing and data analysis. You will need to be hands-on and prepared to personally engage in supplier/operations planning and oversight.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

  • Develop mechanical component, assembly, and installation designs and associated technical data – models, drawings, test plans, analysis reports, work orders, etc – through the full lifecycle from concept to flight and service.
  • Perform tolerance and other analysis work to validate designs and review analysis work by others.
  • Participate in integrated product teams to coordinate development and execute plans. Initiate and monitor procurement activities.
  • Support fabrication, integration, and test activities by providing product engineering expertise and hands-on support where appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in mechanical design. Modelling, design, and drafting experience in 3D CAD programs. Experience with GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
  • Working knowledge of aerospace requirements, testing, and materials.
  • Working knowledge of design of components like valves, actuators, mechanisms, bellows, tubes, latches, and pressurized components.
  • Working knowledge of fabrication, assembly/integration, and quality control techniques relative to tubes, machined components, and welded hardware.
  • Self-starter, strong bias for action and skills for hands-on problem solving; attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Excellent written, communication and presentation skills.
  • Passion for Blue Origin’s mission: Millions of people living and working in space!
  • Must be a US citizen or national, US permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the US as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in mechanical design. Modelling, design, and drafting experience in Creo. Accomplished expertise with GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
  • Experience with launch vehicle systems, including cryogenics.
  • Experience testing pressurized systems including water, pneumatics, hydraulics, and cryogenic propellants.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and/or guiding other engineers.
  • Experience using Finite Element Analysis, especially ANSYS.
  • Experience with thermo-fluid solver applications Thermal Desktop (Sinda Fluint), AFT (Fathom/Arrow), Excel based models, REFPROP.
