Northrop Grumman is hiring a Sr. Staff Systems Engineer to be located in Dulles, VA. This role is in support of the Habitat and Logistics Outpost (HALO) program. HALO is the first pressurized habitable element of NASA's Gateway, a space station to be constructed in cis-lunar space. HALO is a complex system consisting of critical elements such as active thermal control, environmental control and life support systems, fault tolerant computing, high power systems, critical safety functions, crew interfaces in a volume and mass constrained structure. The vehicle is in advanced stages of design, however significant customer requirement changes are still forthcoming.  

The Design Integration Thread Lead will oversee the Area of Responsibility for Thermal and Environment Control and Life Support Systems including Requirement Ownership and Technical Integration.

Requirement Ownership: 

  • Full ownership of a subset HALO System (L3) requirements, consistent with their AOR 

  • In this role, they are responsible for the derivation of those requirements from customer (L2) requirements (if still applicable) and allocation/derivation of L4 (subsystem requirements). The Thread Lead will work closely with the associated Embedded SE's who own the subsystem specifications. 

  • Thread lead is not responsible for authorship but is required to be cognizant of relevant derivations of their requirements to lower levels (L4 to L5, etc) and is expected to work closely with Embedded SE and relevant Cognizant Engineers. 

  • The thread lead is required for ultimate verification of their L3 requirements including, but not limited to: definition of L3 verification criteria, ensuring that criteria is properly flowed down to L4 and L5, working with Embedded SE's and CogEs to ensure that verification data is acceptable to closes L3's (reviewing test plans, test reports, vendor specs, etc.), ensuring any required system level analyses/ tests are adequate 

  • Author of Verification Closure Notices for L3 requirements in their AOR 

  • Responsible for authoring and ensuring approval of in a timely manner and waivers/deviations to their L3 requirements. The Thread Lead will work closely with Embedded SE's in gathering any required material 

Technical Integration:

  • Responsible for horizontal integration across the system in their AOR. The Thread Lead bears final responsibility for ensuring the integrated design closes in their AOR 

  • Responsible for the system technical baseline in their AOR. The Thread Lead is responsible for properly documenting and managing the technical baseline including, but not limited to, ensure that any design changes are properly incorporated into all relevant engineering products 

  • Own system level analysis products in their AOR (e.g. system thermal analysis, etc.) 

  • Own system level test plans/reports in their AOR 

  • Work closely with Embedded SE's to manage any horizontal integration issues 

  • Owner of relevant cross-cutting program risks in their AOR including mitigation plans

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM or related discipline + 20 years of experience or Master’s Degree in STEM or related discipline + 18 years of experience or PhD Degree in STEM or related discipline + 15 years of experience

  • Has participated in the full program lifecycle of a space program, from requirements development through integration/test/verification.

  • Has led or been the primary contributor for a subsystem or subassembly within spacecraft design

  • Has a technical background within Thermal or Mechanical Engineering

  • Has supported the evaluation and implementation of significant contractual changes

  • Has fully supported the development of installation drawings, the development of test plans and has reviewed End Item Data Packages for delivered components.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Active thermal control systems (fluid pumps) integrated with environmental control systems (heat exchangers)

  • Experience with Pressure Control Systems

  • Experience with O2 control, CO2 removal, confined space air control, air trace contamination monitoring, fire detection.

Salary Range: $183,100.00 - $274,700.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
