Job description

Sierra Space Careers: Dare to Dream

We honor those that are not afraid to dream big dreams, those that tenaciously chase their dreams even when others say it cannot be done, those that achieve big dreams and change everything. Those are Dreams Worth Chasing.

At Sierra Space we envision a future where humanity lives and works in space, on moons, and on distant planets. Our mission isn’t restricted to the few, instead we see a future where all people can choose to live, work, discover and explore beyond our planet. Our company is building a platform in space to benefit life on Earth and together we will alter the course of humanity.

We have a bold mission. We are a bold company. Together, we are an extraordinary team.

About the Role

Do you have a passion to learn and test new ideas? Join our team! As a Material Science Engineer III, you will be using your skills and expertise to select, develop, and test material solutions for our complex products and technologies. These cover a very wide range from state of the art mission payloads and electronic systems through highly integrated aircraft to orbital and space exploration systems. You'll be responsible for the development of material and process specifications and providing guidance to design engineers to ensure that appropriate materials are selected to meet mission requirements. You'll also be involved with the development and verification of strength tolerance utilized in structural analysis of non-metallic and metallic structures/parts and creation of qualification test plans and reports.

As a Material Science Engineer III, you will primarily contribute to the development composite materials, bonded structure, and thermal protection systems. In this role you will design, build, and test at the coupon, element, and component level in order to verify customer requirements and validate analyses. Additional responsibilities will include development of test plans for evaluating the structural performance of complex parts parts and systems, coordination with the program team to develop, qualify, and implement manufacturing process specifications, and creation of test reports, which interpret data and correlate experimental vs analytical results.  You will report to the Materials Development Lead and work in concert with the Materials and Processes Assurance team, program design engineering team and all other program elements to help with composite product development and qualification.
