This role will be responsible for the functional management of the mechanical engineering staff at Cesium’s Broomfield, CO, site. Responsibilities include developing standard processes for mechanical engineering such as design checklists, design and analysis methodologies, mechanical verification & validation plans, and all aspects of the mechanical engineering lifecycle. The selected candidate will be responsible for the deployment of resources to programs, developing and maintaining processes, customer & vendor interfaces, and other intra-organizational coordination activities. In addition, the selected candidate will be responsible for the mentorship, performance management, and career development of department members.
 
The successful Engineering Manager of Mechanical Engineering will also serve as a senior member of the technical staff and will be responsible for leadership in various phases of mechanical system and hardware designs from initial concept through requirements definition, architecture definition, part selection, detailed design, analysis, manufacturing, testing, qualification, and in-orbit support of Cesium's products. Mechanical design tasks will include development of concept designs, feasibility studies, performance of mechanical/thermal analyses, CAD design of communications electronics packaging and/or spacecraft structures/mechanisms, and test design.
 
The ideal candidate has extensive experience in PCBA-level and system-level electronics packaging and mechanical systems for space and aerospace applications and has managed successful engineering teams. The successful candidate will also present engineering design review materials to our customers and executive team, as well as participate in proposal-writing efforts. As such, excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Partner with senior management and recruitment to ensure staffing goals are met in support of business growth.
  • Ensure necessary training and certification programs align with business and employee development needs.
  • Promote company culture and values within the Mechanical Engineering team.
  • Lead mechanical architecture-level trade studies. Select and develop mechanical and thermal technology nodes to advance Cesium’s product roadmap.
  • Define and validate space/aerospace system-level mechanical requirements and interfaces.
  • Direct and contribute to mechanical concept development in support of proposals.
  • Lead mechanical design and analysis on high-criticality programs and products.
  • Lead efforts in developing mechanical engineering processes.
  • Develop definitions for the baseline set of technical documents for new programs and products.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor of Science (BS) or Master of Science (MS) degree in Mechanical Engineering (ME) from an accredited university or institution.
  • 6-8 years of industry experience as an individual contributor in the design and analysis of aerospace and space communications electronics and/or spacecraft structures/mechanisms.
  • Additional 2 years of engineering management experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate teams in a leadership role.
  • The ability to lead a growing team of engineers while making contributions as a senior member of the technical engineering staff.
  • Experience with professional simulation tools such as Ansys Mechanical and SolidWorks Simulation, as well as CAD/PDM tools such as SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM.
  • Experience with the full aerospace / space product engineering process including design, analysis, manufacturing, testing, qualification, and post-delivery / in-orbit support.
  • Experience with aerospace / space systems environmental qualification and AI&T phases.
  • Experience designing for aerospace / space manufacturing methods, such as CNC machining, composites layup, etc.
  • Hands-on experience in aerospace / space manufacturing and operations.
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant industry standards (IPC, NASA, SMC, AIAA, SAE, NAS, DO, MIL, etc.).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to define work direction, track milestones, and demonstrate progress on large, open-ended projects.
  • Sense of urgency and the ability to convey priorities to and motivate the team.
  • Works well under pressure and with competing priorities.
  • Takes initiative and enjoys implementing new processes and procedures.
  • Natural ability to lead and mentor others and enjoys fostering a collaborative, inventive, and high-energy dynamic environment.
  • Ability to obtain and hold a U.S. government security clearance.
