Job description
Pixxel is a space data company building a health monitor for our planet. We are doing that by deploying a constellation of some of the world's most advanced earth imaging satellites in lower earth orbit and an analytics platform (on ground) with tools that enable easy application of this data across a multitude of sectors. Our fully deployed constellation will be capable of beaming down daily imagery of any place on earth. This role will contribute towards the design and development of optomechanical assemblies for Pixxel's high throughput space-based hyperspectral cameras.
Β
If you love working at the cutting edge of technology and want to contribute towards making the world a better place by bringing down the benefits of space down to earth, this is the place for you.
Β
Responsibilities:
- You will be regularly expected to model spacecraft structural elements using the Finite Element Method, and run analyses on these components.
- You will be expected to work with the design and testing teams to generate testing load profiles (based on the local environments) for various components, and verifying the validity of these loads with the rest of the spacecraft vibration environment.
- You will be expected to handle correlation activities between testing data and analysis data, and update our modelling philosophies to improve correlation.
- You will be expected to prepare analytical/hand-calculatable models for quick studies and trade-offs.
- You will be expected to help in setting up processes and systems to ensure standardisation of FEM modelling, and analyses.
- You will be expected to evaluate, and enforce commonly-used industry standards (including those specific to the space industry) for structural modelling and verification.
- You will be expected to assist with the design process by speeding up the design-simulate-test iteration cycle.
- In addition to these role-specific responsibilities listed above, you will also be expected to meet the role-requirements of a structural design engineer, which includes but are not strictly limited to
- The design, validation, interface control, and DFM (Design for Manufacturing) of various components;
- Communication and coordination with vendors for contracted components;
- Do trade-offs and case-studies on various edge-cases and domain specific problems which may include assisting both the structural team and other teams in choosing between components intended to be procured, or making high level structural design changes.
Basic Qualification:
- BE/BTech or higher in Mechanical/Structural/Aerospace Engineering.
- 5+ years of experience in the industry (or a Mastersβ degree with 3+ years of subsequent industry experience) with experience in:
- The end-to-end execution of a design cycle, culminating in vibration testing;
- Finite Element Modelling and Analysis using an industry standard FEM/FEA solver;
- Basic analytical calculations involving static and dynamic load cases of structures;
- Working with the fundamental underlying mathematics and assumptions in the Finite Element Method;
- Basic numerical analysis and numerical simulation.
Skills/Requirements:
- 3+ years experience in a senior design and analysis role, with extensive experience in test correlation of FEA data.
- Must have seen the design, iteration, manufacturing, testing, and test data correlation phases of a structural assembly (not just individual components), preferably being tested to space standards on an electrodynamic shaker setup.
- Familiarity with various engineering standards used in the satellite industry, including but not limited to:
- Design standards (like ones by AIAA, ASME, ECSS, etc.)
- Testing standards (like ones by ECSS, NASA, etc.)
- GD&T standards (like ASME Y14.5, etc.)
- Must have a keen understanding of vibration environments (specifically spacecraft vibration environments), including the sources of their generation, their characterisation, and how to test and design for them.
- CAD and FEA experience must have been in NX CAD/CAM, and Simcenter NX Nastran.
- A strong understanding of numerical analysis, numerical solvers, and the limitations of these solvers, including the fundamental mathematical systems underlying them.
- A solid understanding of the physical modelling of systems, including the selection of model functions, and edge case analyses of models.
Perks:
- Insurance covers for you and your family, free access to mental health professionals, paid sick leave and other benefits (vaccination drives, etc.).
- Reasonably flexible working hours.
- Get to work and regularly interact with some of the top scientists and professionals in space technology at Pixxel.
- Get exposure to the international space community and the chance to publish research on behalf of Pixxel.
