NASA chose Axiom Space to develop its next-generation astronaut spacesuits for the Artemis lunar missions. These new spacesuits built by Axiom Space will provide astronauts with advanced capabilities for space exploration, while providing commercially developed human systems needed to access, live, and work in microgravity as well as on and around the Moon.

 

SUMMARY:  Our team is looking for an energetic and dynamic mechanical technician who will primarily be responsible for fabrication, assembly, and maintaining Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and facility hardware equipment. This position interfaces with other technical groups---engineers and technicians. This position reports to the EVA Program Support Manager and will based at our Gemini facility.

 

This position has multiple job openings (and may be filled at multiple levels).

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Read and accurately interpret engineering models, blueprints, wiring diagrams, assembly prints, and schematics.
  • Operate machines and/or use hand tools and power tools.
  • Setup and operate a wide range of precision calibrated tools such as torque wrenches, micrometers, calipers, depth gauges and optical measuring instruments.
  • Stage, assemble, install, and inspect spacecraft mechanical, electrical, and fluid components by interpreting and utilizing engineering drawings, provided specifications, written assembly instructions, and test procedures.
  • Operate material/hardware handling equipment including – but not limited to – forklift, overhead cranes, other lifting equipment, etc.
  • Perform assembly and checkouts of various ground support equipment and facility equipment related to spacesuit operations.
  • Collaborate with Engineers and/or teams of diverse skills and backgrounds to develop and document activities such as assembly work instructions and/or hardware processing procedures.
  • Perform routine maintenance functions such as daily clean-up of work areas to reduce FOD and maintain clean room and safety guidelines.
  • Consistently apply written, verbal, listening and visual media and skills as appropriate to ensure accurate communication.
  • Proactively identify issues and problems and make recommendations.
  • Consistently take ownership of and responsibility for personal and team performance to promote continuous improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Industry certification, trade school training and/or degree in related field preferred.
  • 0-2 years of professional experience working in the aviation or aerospace industry in a technical, hands-on capacity working with test, flight and safety critical hardware assemblies that require high attention to detail and quality of workmanship.
  • Experience in General Aerospace manufacturing, assembly, and fabrication (Clean room experience desired)
    • Piping and tubing routing and installation
    • Test facilities/rig fabrication, operation, and maintenance
    • Instrumentation and electrical harness routing, installation, and checkout
    • Mechanical, and Fluids Ground Support Equipment (GSE) operation
    • Pressure systems
  • Familiarization with metallic and non-metallic hardware assembly
  • Proficient in the use of various tools and equipment such as torque wrenches, calipers, micrometers, etc.
  • Experience working with AGILE manufacturing desired.

 

Essential Functions

Work Environment: General inside lab environment but can involve outside work depending on the task.

 

Requirements 

  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Management has the prerogative to select at any level for which the position is advertised.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods. May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs.
  • Equipment, Machines, Power tools and hand tools.
  • Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).
