Post-Doctoral Research Position in Exoplanet Characterization

Baltimore, Maryland, United States

Job description

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to work on the characterization of exoplanets and their atmospheres. The successful applicant will primarily work with Dr. Hannah Diamond-Lowe, who will be joining STScI in Fall 2024, and Dr. Néstor Espinoza, who leads a dynamic team of postdocs and graduate students at STScI focusing on exoplanet characterization.

The successful candidate will join a broader team of US and international collaborators working to determine whether or not nearby hot rocky worlds orbiting M dwarfs have atmospheres using eclipse photometry with JWST/MIRI (the Hot Rocks Survey, JWST GO 3730; PI Diamond-Lowe). Further characterizing detected atmospheres or bare rocky surfaces is a central research goal. Applicants with an interest in small planets from an observational, data analysis, modeling, or theory perspective are encouraged to apply. Also important is a willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, and work independently to bring projects to fruition. The successful applicant will be expected to be involved with and lead research in exoplanetary science.

The position at STScI offers:

  • A vibrant research environment with scientists working at the cutting-edge of JWST science,
  • A competitive salary, benefits package, and moving stipend,
  • Support to lead papers, present results at conferences, and develop academic and professional skills to prepare the applicant for future job opportunities.

STScI offers a dynamic, supportive, and inclusive research environment with journal clubs, science clubs, and a postdoc mentoring program. STScI is located next to Johns Hopkins University, and there are ample opportunities to interact with the JHU scientific community, as well as researchers in the broader Maryland area (e.g., University of Maryland, NASA Goddard). The successful candidate will join both the local STScI Hot Rocks team and the broader transiting exoplanet ExoSTScI team working on a wide array of topics in exoplanetary science, including new results from JWST.

STScI offers an excellent benefits package, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. STScI's pay is commensurate to the year of Ph.D. The nominal start date of this position is September 2024, but earlier or later start dates are possible. The appointment will be for three years.

Any questions about the position should be directed to Néstor Espinoza (nespinoza@stsci.edu) and Hannah Diamond-Lowe (hdiamondlowe@space.dtu.dk).

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree at the time they start the position. Applicants are required to complete an online application by January 12, 2024 through the direct link below.

The following materials will be requested in PDF format: a one-page cover letter that indicates the applicants' interests; goals and qualifications for the position; curriculum vitae with list of publications; and a 2-to-3-page statement of research interests and relevant technical expertise. Applicants will be requested to provide names and contact information of three people who will be automatically contacted by the submission system for letters of reference. Applicants should also contact these letter writers separately, to ensure that references are received by January 12, 2024. Complete applications for which all references have been received by this date will receive full consideration.
