Post-Doctoral Research Position in JWST Exoplanet Atmospheric Characterization

Baltimore, Maryland, United States

Full Time

Job description

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to work with Dr. Néstor Espinoza and Dr. Sarah Kendrew on the characterization of exoplanet atmospheres; in particular, with observations to be obtained by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The successful candidate will join teams composed of US and international collaborators, and focus on analyzing, interpreting and reporting results from several JWST GO programs focusing on the characterization of transiting exoplanet atmospheres with the NIRISS, NIRSpec and MIRI instruments. In particular, the work will involve performing unique exoplanet science enabled by JWST, such as morning/evening terminator spectroscopy, as well as the study of photochemical products in gas giant exoplanet atmospheres. This position, thus, offers a unique opportunity to be involved and lead research on novel and exciting aspects of exoplanetary science.

In summary, the position offers:

  • A rich environment to be directly involved in cutting-edge JWST science,
  • An opportunity to gain valuable JWST NIRISS, NIRSpec and MIRI data analysis and interpretation experience,
  • Many opportunities to lead papers and present results at conferences.

STScI offers a dynamic and supportive postdoctoral environment, including journal clubs, science clubs, a postdoc mentoring program, and an excellent location and interaction with the local John Hopkins University community and the broader Maryland area (e.g., University of Maryland, NASA Goddard). The Postdoctoral Researcher will join both, the local STScI JWST GO teams and the broader transiting exoplanet ExoSTScI team, composed of scientists, astronomers, analysts and grad students working on a wide array of topics related to transiting exoplanetary science, including JWST exoplanet science. STScI offers an excellent benefits package, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. STScI's pay is commensurate to the year of Ph.D. The nominal start date of this position is July 2024, but earlier or later start dates are possible. Initial appointment will be for two years, with renewal possible for a third year, subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding.

Any questions about the position should be directed to Néstor Espinoza (nespinoza@stsci.edu) and Sarah Kendrew (sarah.kendrew@esa.int).

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree at the time they start the position. Experience reducing and analyzing ground or space-based exoplanet atmosphere observations is strongly preferred, but we encourage applications from candidates with other related skills as well. Also important is a willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, and work independently to bring projects to fruition. Applicants are required to complete an online application by January 12th, 2024, through the direct link below.

Please only use this link to apply: https://stsci.slideroom.com/#/permalink/program/76664

The following materials will be requested in PDF format: a one-page cover letter that indicates the applicants' interests, goals and qualifications for the position; curriculum vitae with list of publications; and a 2-to-3-page statement of research interests and relevant technical expertise. Applicants will be requested to provide names and contact information of one to three people who will be automatically contacted by the submission system for letters of reference. Applicants should also contact these letter writers separately, to ensure that references are received by January 12, 2024. Complete applications for which all references have been received by this date will receive full consideration.
