Postdoctoral Research Scholar 

Study the Impacts of Volcanoes, Fires and Pollution on the Earth System

 

National Institute of Aerospace (NIA), located in Hampton, Virginia, has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in the area of atmospheric sciences. The successful candidate will work with renowned scientists that study the impacts of volcanoes, fire and pollution on the stratosphere and climate. This position requires broad knowledge in atmospheric sciences, good skills in programming (IDL, Fortran, Python) and a spirit of exploring the unknown to make significant discoveries. The candidate will perform various tasks including analysis of satellite observations and numerical simulations but could also be involved in field work in multiple international locations (France, India, Brazil). This work supports multiple government customer programs but primarily the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).  Progress will be presented at relevant technical meetings.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on atmospheric aerosols, processes, and dynamics.
  • Utilize cutting-edge technology, satellite data, and airborne observations to analyze atmospheric phenomena.
  • Develop and apply advanced models and simulations to understand complex atmospheric interactions.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to address pressing scientific questions related to stratospheric sciences.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.
  • Stay up to date with the latest developments in atmospheric science and contribute to NIA and NASA's missions.

 

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Earth Science, or a related field.
  • Strong background in atmospheric science, climate dynamics, or a relevant subfield.
  • Proficiency in data analysis using software tools such as IDL, Python, or similar.
  • Experience with atmospheric modeling, satellite data analysis, or airborne observations is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an International and diverse research team.
  • Open to travel internationally.
  • A passion for advancing our understanding of Earth's atmosphere and climate.

 

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with atmospheric aerosol research.
  • Experience with Artificial Intelligence to analyze data, model.
  • Experience with satellite data analysis.
