Position Overview: As a member of the Metrology, Strategy & Analysis organization, you’ll develop and implement mathematical algorithm solutions for optical and spatial metrology and fabrication data processing, support experimentation in an optical laboratory environment, and perform other challenges in applied mathematics.

 

Specific Requirements:

In this position, you will be responsible for:

  • Generation of machine instructions to deterministically grind and polish optical substrates
  • Definition and development of data reduction and physics simulation algorithms to support analysis of numerical data sets and electro optical system design, as well as optical and spatial metrology and fabrication processes.
  • Prototyping algorithms in mathematical analysis platforms such as Mathematica and MatLab, and reducing them to practice by developing proprietary software in a compiled language.
  • Participation in designing experiments, preparing hypotheses to be tested, and developing models
  • Author manufacturing procedures for use by opticians and machine technicians. Interface with technicians to ensure process conformance and provide direction when needed
  • Providing support in the process of designing tooling for different polishing and grinding machines
  • Providing support for process improvement initiatives with the goals of; developing fabrication techniques for new materials, reducing cycle time, reducing process variation, and minimizing non-conformance risk for existing processes
  • Participation in root cause analysis investigations for both machine failures and manufacturing process non-conformances
  • Providing support for manufacturing plans for current and future programs
  • Ensuring safe handling of in-process and deliverable hardware

 

Education Requirements: 

Bachelor’s Degree in Optical Engineering / Physics / Material Science / Applied Math.  Other degrees of similar exposure to the math and sciences will be considered.

 

Experience Required: 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong Computer Skills
  • Strong team player with the ability to interface with other internal teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Self-disciplined with the ability to stay focused on task, while maintaining a high degree of flexibility
  • Ability to work safely on fragile, high value optics within manufacturing and laboratory environments

 

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience, dependent on level, in a manufacturing environment including working knowledge of optical cad drawings and tolerances.
  • Advanced mathematical background
  • Python scripting and mathematical modeling (e.g.. MatLab, Mathematica, MathCad, or similar).
  • Familiarity with electronic/robotics/CNC control systems
  • Ability to apply basic manufacturing skills in the production, inspection and test of optics and optical product
  • Working in a Laboratory setting

 

EHS/Environmental Requirements:

  • Able to lift/move computer and printer equipment
