Lunar Transportation: This role is part of the Lunar Transportation business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface. 

 

As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers (use as appropriate), you will work as a Fault Management and System Autonomy engineer on the Systems Engineering team for the lunar lander system. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of Fault Management & System Autonomy products and processes. You will be responsible for design, development, and analysis of system behaviors, FMSA requirements definition and decomposition, integration, verification, and validation. Your passion, expertise, and skills will impact the design and integration of the spacecraft and mission success. You should expect that this foundational part of our vision will require your excellent communication and teamwork.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Architect and analyze autonomous behaviors, modes, and states
  • Establish and control fault management architectures including design principles and requirements
  • Define redundancy architecture, including cross-strapping and fault containment regions for integrated systems
  • Participate in engineering activities including Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analyses (FMECA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Functional Hazard Analyses (FHAs), Probabilistic Risk Assessments (PRA), reliability analyses, and developing mitigation plans
  • Support the planning and execution of integrated system Fault Management and Autonomy Verification and Validation
  • Review, monitor, and approve fault management and autonomy design, development, and test
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to other engineers across the program and company

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in aerospace engineering, systems engineering, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience with fault-tolerance strategies and architectures for safety and mission critical systems
  • Experience with autonomous system design, analysis, and test
  • Experience with some of the lifecycle development of aerospace systems, including requirement definition, design solution definition, implementation, integration, verification and validation, qualification, commissioning, and operation
  • Some first principles knowledge of major spacecraft subsystems
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate technical information to non-technical partners
  • Ability to form relationships with experts from varying engineering fields and provide constructive feedback about FMSA, safety, and reliability concerns
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

 

Desired:

  • Experience defining and performing complex trade studies
  • Experience with design, development, and certification of spaceflight systems, avionics system architectures and designs, and radiation environments/effects
  • Experience with performing safety analyses including Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analyses (FMECA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Functional Hazard Analyses (FHAs), Probabilistic Risk Assessments (PRA), and reliability analyses
  • Experience with logical and physical architecture definition and decomposition
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing

Paid Time Off:  Up to four (4) weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours, and up to 14 company-paid holidays for all regular employees (including part-time), fixed-term, and interns.

Discretionary bonus: Employees may be eligible for discretionary bonuses in addition to base pay. Bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results.
