Job description
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration heavy-lift launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to Earth’s orbit and beyond. Engineered with a reusable first stage and a seven-meter payload fairing, New Glenn is building the road to space.
As a part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of experts, you will be responsible for comprehensive oversight and execution of contamination control for the New Glenn program. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of contamination control from the design phase through manufacturing and launch processing to meet spacecraft requirements. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.
We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!
Responsibilities:
- Provide guidance and expertise in the support of spacecraft integration, ground support equipment, and other spacecraft launch activities and engineering oversight of cleanroom operations.
- Coordinate the integration and documentation of contamination requirements through the development, preflight preparation, mission, and/or post-flight phases of assigned systems and/or payloads.
- Develop test plans to collect and analyze particulate and molecular contamination and provide support of cleaning processes, inspections, and verifications of hardware and operations to meet mission goals.
- Collaborate with design engineers to provide contamination control inputs to hardware design and review manufacturing work instructions for adequate cleanliness levels throughout the build process.
- Develop, review, and coordinate on program contamination control plans, test plans, procedures, personnel cleanroom training, and material and process specifications.
- Quantify the contamination cleanliness levels required for the performance of space hardware and provide the procedures necessary to be maintained during fabrication, assembly, integration, testing, launch, and operations.
- Develop the methodology required to certify hardware cleanliness through the life cycle of the project per IEST-STD-CC1246 and ensure compliance with policies and standards defining the methods to measure, control and reduce contamination.
- Lead thermal vacuum testing to quantify outgassing rates as well as sample collection of condensable materials per ASTM E595 and ASTM E1559.
- Coach, mentor and technically assist other engineers.
Minimum Qualifications:
- B.S degree in Physics, Material Sciences and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related aerospace background or field of study.
- Ability to interpret and apply high-level system requirements to practical design solutions.
- 5+ years’ experience in clean rooms, contamination control, analysis, and spacecraft integration.
- Demonstrated technical depth in cleaning and contamination control with knowledge of related ASTM and ISO standards; ability to develop customized cleaning requirements and techniques for complex hardware.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and handle small and large projects with a diversity of customers.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications:
- M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Physics, Material Sciences and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related aerospace background or field of study.
- Provide development, instrumentation, and launch vehicle consultation on contamination and coatings issues, thermal coatings applications, material property characterization, and coatings flight qualification.
- Familiar with a variety of aerospace materials and process engineering subject areas such as metals, composites, adhesives, bonding, cleaning, failure analysis, manufacturing operations and related quality control concepts.
- Experience leading design and manufacturing teams in an aerospace environment, including preparing specifications and test reports.
- Develop and apply methods to analyze and predict transfer of particulate and molecular contamination from the launch vehicle to the spacecraft from encapsulation to Contamination and Collision Avoidance Maneuver (CCAM).
- Able to receive and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance.
Inclusivity Statement
Don’t meet all desired requirements? Studies have shown that some people are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single desired qualification. At Blue Origin, we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every desired qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
