ispace EUROPE is seeking a highly motivated and talented Junior Mechanical Engineer to join its team. The vision of ispace is to expand and sustain humanity’s presence in space by developing a lunar economy built on the resources available on the Moon.

ispace EUROPE is the company’s regional office located in Luxembourg, in the heart of Europe. We are developing ispace’s next generation rover that will perform a variety of customer missions on the lunar surface. We are a small team, motivated by the challenges of the Lunar Frontier, and determined to achieve the company’s vision.

The Junior Mechanical Engineer’s responsibility will be to support all structural and mechanical activities within the European office of ispace. The position requires a good grasp of the complete mechanical domain, as well as a cross-functional mindset, a general interest in space robotics and a big drive to reach the moon. The candidate would be expected to support our rover and product development activities through development of space structure and mechanisms, performing structural analysis, preparing mechanical drawings and contributing to system testing.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Contribute to the structural design for spacecraft system development including lander and other transportation system elements
Design structural components of our lunar rovers
Support the completion of the component design specification and the design reviews
Perform preliminary design including trade studies, material, component, manufacturing process selection, and design validation
Prepare for and execute tests: test plan, report, analysis of test data, and ground support equipment designs for component and system tests
Support detailed design of a rover system for structural and operational performance
Produce build-to-print technical documents
Supporting other engineers' analyses by providing and simplifying 3D models
Perform rapid prototyping, hardware assembly, integrating and testing including travel to test sites
Maintain proactive coordination between teams to balance and achieve project goals
Speak up, identify risks and issues, define and manage mitigation plans
Travel occasionally to other ispace offices and vendor locations

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Hold BS and/or MS in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering
Have 1-3 years of experience in the design of aerospace or aviation applications
Have extensive experience with CAD software packages and drawing production
Have knowledge of Geometric Dimension and Tolerance (GD&T) and of the stack-up calculation method for drawing tolerances (i.e. RSS)
Familiar with structure technical concepts
Able to perform basic hand calculations to determine strength in simple components
Able to construct Finite Element Models of complex components and assemblies to determine strength, modal response, etc
Have knowledge of mechanical design, material selection, and fabrication processes for spaceflight hardware or equivalent
Have excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
Be comfortable with change, fast-pace environment, and learning new things
Proactive attitude, team player, and strong responsibility for own work

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Proficiency in Solidworks, or equivalent software packages
Proficiency in Femap/Nastran or equivalent software packages
Have experience in industrial development projects in aerospace or aviation field
Demonstrated experience in mechanical design of metallic and composite structures
Good understanding of design for manufacture philosophy and material manufacturing processes
Practical knowledge of relevant ECSS standards
