Job description
At Near Space Labs we design, build and operate a fleet of stratospheric robots to image the earth. We launch our proprietary, balloon-based imaging robots to heights between 40,000 and 60,000 feet. From this vantage point, we capture petabytes of imagery for a variety of use cases.
We are seeking a Fleet Performance Engineer with a strong sense of ownership, to develop monitoring systems and analysis tools for our fleet of stratospheric robots. In this role, you will also serve as the technical reference for the maintenance team. This position reports to the Lead Performance & Maintenance Engineer and involves close collaboration with key teams—including Flight Operations, R&D, and Manufacturing—at the core of our delivery.
Your responsibilities will be
- Develop systems and tools to track the performance of each robot;
- Together with R&D and manufacturing, decide on key performance indicators and system anomalies to track;
- Review flight performance daily, develop automation tools to process daily data;
- Identify failure patterns and reliability issues and escalate appropriately to other engineering teams;
- Become familiar with all of the robot’s subsystems and be the technical reference for the maintenance unit;
- As needed, manage maintenance technicians;
- Help set up and scale a small-scale maintenance floor in our office.
Your Skills & background
- 5+ years of experience in an engineering production or maintenance organization.
- Experience in a small company or startup environment is desirable.
- Hands-on experience with design, manufacturing or maintenance processes in Robotics, Aeronautics, Drones, Auto, IoT, or a similar field containing hardware and embedded software.
- Python or other programming languages are a plus;
- Degree in engineering; industrial, mechanical, production, electronics, aerospace or similar.
- Mission-oriented and focused on accomplishing goals autonomously.
- Willingness to cover different hats and roles as the company expands.
Location
This is an onsite, full-time role in Brooklyn, NY.

Compensation and Benefits
- $120,000 - $150,000 salary range depending on location and experience;
- 25 days annual Paid Time Off;
