At Northrop Grumman, our employees have incredible opportunities to work on revolutionary systems that impact people's lives around the world today, and for generations to come. Our pioneering and inventive spirit has enabled us to be at the forefront of many technological advancements in our nation's history - from the first flight across the Atlantic Ocean, to stealth bombers, to landing on the moon. We look for people who have bold new ideas, courage and a pioneering spirit to join forces to invent the future, and have fun along the way. Our culture thrives on intellectual curiosity, cognitive diversity and bringing your whole self to work — and we have an insatiable drive to do what others think is impossible. Our employees are not only part of history, they're making history.

Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Launch and Missile Defense Systems offers an exciting opportunity for a Staff Engineer Systems – Global Systems Engineer SME (25-295 & 25-296) to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. This role, based in Huntsville, AL, is crucial in supporting the U.S. President, Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels.

Relocation assistance is not available for this position, and this role is on-site with no remote options.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is the core part of the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that allows the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, monitor battle progress, and actively manage designated networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission goals. C2BMC supports a layered missile defense capability that provides an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. C2BMC acts as a force multiplier by networking, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations both worldwide and locally to enhance performance. Additionally, C2BMC is an essential part of all system ground and flight tests, which verify and demonstrate the current and future capabilities of the missile defense system.

The Systems Engineer must have expertise and leadership to ensure a disciplined system engineering approach to defining, developing, and analyzing system capabilities. Based on understanding the design and results of comparisons, use relevant systems engineering tools and documents to explore, understand, and propose changes to systems engineering analysis, user CONOPS, system operational concepts, and system and interface requirements specifications in support of C2BMC. Work towards future BMDS capabilities, including sensor management, tasking, cueing, and discrimination architectures. This role involves coordinating engineering disciplines to resolve system-level issues and problems. Participate in developing, executing, and analyzing the results of various software tests in a lab environment as needed. Learn, understand, and represent the perspectives of warfighters, operators, and system owners, ensuring those perspectives are respected throughout engineering efforts. As a member of the systems engineering team, develop innovative solutions to existing and new problems in your areas of expertise and ensure that system requirements are clearly understood and correctly implemented.

Essential Functions:

  • Must understand systems engineering, systems design, development, integration & test, and verification
  • The candidate will possess significant experience in a related engineering environment, with good knowledge and expertise in systems-of-systems definition and integration
  • Must have experience in missile defense or space domain awareness, including operational and technical issues related to engagement management, track management, sensor management, and networks
  • A successful applicant should have a proven track record of applying system engineering principles effectively to develop product solutions
  • Should have prior experience leading complex teams in a key role
  • Ability to analyze high-level needs and, using a structured and logical approach, refine those needs into an integrated set of requirements that leads to a fielded product
  • Ability to lead/perform portions of the work and direct the activities of other systems engineers
  • Excellent communication skills are required (both written and oral), as well as the ability to communicate effectively and present technical approaches and findings
  • Capable of drafting and executing engineering plans within a project

Basic Qualifications:

Please note your updated security clearance and IAT/relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.

  • Applicants must have a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
  • Ability and willingness to travel 10% of the time are required
  • Must have experience developing system engineering artifacts:
    • Specifications
    • Interface Control Documents
