Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Launch and Missile Defense Systems is offering an exciting opportunity for a Sr Principal Engineer Systems Architect – Hardware Architect (25-298) to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. This role, based in Colorado Springs, CO, or Huntsville, AL, is crucial in supporting the U.S. President, Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels.

Relocation assistance is not available for this position, and this role is on-site with no remote options.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is the central part of the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that allows the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, monitor battle progress, and actively control designated networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives. C2BMC supports a layered missile defense capability that provides an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. C2BMC acts as a force multiplier by networking, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations both worldwide and locally to enhance performance. Additionally, C2BMC is a crucial part of all system ground and flight tests, which verify and demonstrate the current and future capabilities of the missile defense system.

Member of the Systems Engineering & Verification (SE&V) Resource Management Area (RMA). This role supports the design and development of hardware, network, and hardware product selection, as well as procurement support and hardware approval processes for the C2BMC program, both regionally and globally. The selected candidates will work directly with the HW Architect. They will be responsible for collaborating with the Architecture Review Board (ARB) and the Hardware Site Engineering Control Board (HSECB), as well as assigning engineering staff from all functional areas to support the selection of hardware and software.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for compiling, maintaining, and coordinating Bill of Material changes with Task Order Management and Customer Representatives
  • Support the delivery of multiple CDRLs, including hardware and software reports and current design details
  • Assist in preparing BOMs for proposal pricing and ongoing hardware and software evaluation to support EOS/EOL and evolution roadmaps
  • Will also involve iteration planning
  • Experience working in an integrated team environment with systems, software, and specialty engineers to develop hardware and infrastructure solutions using engineering processes and methods
  • Skilled in communicating desired capabilities to a diverse group of developers, engineers, subject matter experts, and users
  • Ability to liaise with the C2BMC Integrated Logistics Support Working Group (ILSWG)
  • Support End of Sale/End of Life COA analysis.
  • Demonstrate outside-the-box thinking
  • Capable of analyzing high-level physical and infrastructure designs
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills to present technical approaches and findings
  • Work effectively and cooperatively with colleagues both within and outside the program
  • The ability to identify disconnects between hardware hosts and COTS software hosted on them
  • Familiarity with the C2BMC system and missile defense domain
  • Support the team leader with working groups, iteration planning, TIMs, ILSWG, and other related tasks

Salary range in Huntsville: $131,100 - $196,700

Salary range in Colorado Springs: $124,900 - $187,300

Basic Qualifications:

Please note your updated security clearance and IAT/relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in STEM fields like Computer Science, Hardware Engineering, Systems Engineering, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university is preferred, along with 8 years of experience; or a STEM Master’s degree (preferred) in a related field with 6 years of relevant work experience; or a PhD in a related field with 4 years of relevant work experience
  • Applicants must possess a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
  • Ability and willingness to travel 10% of the time are required
  • Must have a proven track record of successfully applying hardware architecture principles to system design and development, experience with Agile planning/JIRA
  • Must understand systems architecture and architecture models
  • Should have experience and expertise in systems architecture, hardware design, and hardware definition
  • Must have a solid understanding of hardware and networking device selection, procurement processes, and a baseline of hardware strategies
  • HW Architecture experience
  • Ability to identify and define an HW/SW baseline.
  • Deep understanding of HW and Network device selection
  • Knowledge of procurement processes
  • Experience with private on-premises cloud systems, including VMware, HP, Dell, and other COTS products, as well as technology evolution planning

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master's Degree in Systems Engineering is preferred
  • Certification: INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) Certification
  • Certification: Object Management Group Certified Systems Modeling Professional - Model Builder Fundamental (OCSMP - MBF)
  • Familiarity with the application and use of hardware, operating systems, and infrastructure, with private on-premises cloud design is a plus
  • Experience with HW/SW Baseline DB is a plus
  • Identifying and defining the desired hardware baseline, integration practices, and methods
  • Provide a technical risk assessment related to unsupported product configurations upon receiving vendor obsolescence notices (for hardware and software), COTS product supportability assessments, and formal trade studies
  • Experience in ballistic missile defense or air defense operations is strongly preferred
  • Experience with private on-premises cloud systems, VMware, HP, Dell, and other COTS products and technologies is preferred
  • Familiarity with hardware maintenance and management approaches (EOS/EOL) is preferred

Additional Northrop Grumman Information:

Salary Range: $124,900.00 - $196,700.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
