Mission of the Position |
The Starlab Chief Medical Officer ensures astronaut health and medical readiness across all mission phases. This role leads medical standards, crew certification, and risk mitigation, integrating with engineering and operations. A board-certified Aerospace Medicine physician, the CMO safeguards human performance for safe, sustained spaceflight in a multinational program environment. |
Essential Duties |
- Provide leadership as the Starlab program medical authority, supporting boards and reviews with medical perspective and ownership of medical risk.
- Lead development and implementation of Starlab medical standards, requirements, and hazard controls across Program elements.
- Define and ensure the medical certification and readiness of assigned astronauts for Starlab missions.
- Oversee the medical care, exercise physiological support and psychological support of Starlab crews, ensuring that the implementation of care meets Starlab and customer requirements.
- Ensure that mission and program risk management processes account for medical considerations and appropriately address areas of medical risk.
- Support Starlab engagement with Human Research Independent Review Board activities and decisions.
- Participate in the development of Starlab medical operations team definition and implementation, providing medical expertise in evaluation of partner and contractor capabilities and performance.
- Evaluate potential customer and partner medical capabilities and take part in acceptance and certification decisions for their participation in Starlab mission activities.

Supervisory Responsibilities |
No direct supervisory responsibilities but the successful candidate will provide input to the Starlab Mission Segment Lead on the performance of partner/contractor organizations and team members. |
Competencies |
Education: - The candidate should be a qualified physician with medical qualifications and experience treating patients in aerospace settings/environments
Experience: - Fifteen (15) + years’ related experience required, less may be considered if the candidate is otherwise outstanding
- Experience as a practicing physician in a relevant specialization
- Experience in human spaceflight medical operations
- Strong knowledge of exercise physiology, particularly in microgravity
- Familiarity with human research protocols and areas of current research
- Significant experience in leading technical teams and navigating decision-making within an organization
Certifications & Licenses: - U.S. board certification in Aerospace Medicine, or equivalent training and experience including treatment of patients in an aerospace setting
