Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Launch and Missile Defense Systems presents an exciting career opportunity for a Principal Engineer Systems Test – X-Lab Test Director (25-224) to join our team of qualified and diverse professionals. Located at Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado Springs, CO, this role is vital in supporting the U.S. President, Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders across strategic, regional, and operational levels.

Relocation assistance is not available for this position, and this role is on-site with no remote options.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program functions as the core element of the Missile Defense System. It is a vital operational system that allows the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, monitor battle progress, and dynamically control designated networked sensors and weapon systems to meet global and regional mission goals. C2BMC supports a layered missile defense capability that provides an optimized response to threats of all ranges at each phase of flight. C2BMC acts as a force multiplier by networking, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations worldwide and regionally to boost performance. Additionally, C2BMC is a key element in all system ground and flight tests, which verify and assess the current and future capabilities of the missile defense system.

The C2BMC National Team Integration and Test Functional Area urgently requires a Test Director (Element Mission Director) to assist in organizing and conducting flight and Ground Tests. The chosen candidate will be responsible for identifying necessary resources, developing and understanding the mission objectives for the system(s) under test, and preparing post-mission reports.

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as a Test Director in the Experimentation Lab by integrating X-Lab prototypes into an MDA test, coordinating with project leads, understanding the prototype's role in the test, helping to map the configuration in the architecture, briefing on the status, and executing the test from the X-Lab
  • Collaborate with the customer to understand their testing needs and find ways to meet those needs within resource constraints
  • Will be responsible for setting up and managing test resources, articles, and tools for data collection during the event
  • Will serve as liaisons to other C2BMC test participants and MDA/BCT test managers
  • Collaborate with project leads of different experiments to ensure smooth event execution throughout the entire mission
  • Position is based near Colorado Springs at Schriever Space Force Base, but occasional travel to customer sites (e.g., EUCOM, CENTCOM) and contractor locations (e.g., Huntsville) may be required
  • Responsible for managing the configuration of a group of lab machines dedicated to specific development activities.
  • Non-standard work hours are very likely during event execution
  • Possess five or more years of experience in a closely related environment, with strong knowledge and expertise in systems-of-systems definition and integration
  • Ability to analyze high-level needs through a structured and logical approach and refine those needs into an integrated set of requirements that leads to a fielded product
  • Communicate technical approaches and findings clearly and effectively

Basic Qualifications:

Please note your updated security clearance and IAT/relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university is preferred, along with 5 years of experience; or a Master’s degree in a related field with 3 years of experience; or 9 years of relevant experience may be considered instead of a degree
  • Applicants must possess an active, current in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is necessary to start
  • Experience in planning and managing flight, ground tests, or Warfighter events
  • Knowledge of C2BMC
  • Must have experience working in an integrated team environment with other systems, software, and specialty engineers to develop solutions using NT or similar processes and methods
  • Must have a proven ability to develop briefings and communicate test plans effectively in writing, be comfortable working in a team environment, learn quickly, work hard, and be interested in and capable of adapting to changing technology
  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, enabling effective collaboration within a small technical team and accurate representation of test perspectives to C2BMC system architects, software designers, other testers, test support staff, the Government customer, and personnel in other MDA programs
