Description
Safety Systems Engineer in the Independent Safety Office, Quality Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality (TEC).
The Independent Safety Office is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, maintenance and certification of compliance with ESA policies, requirements and standards, as well as providing independent support to ESA projects in:
- human spaceflight safety
- space debris mitigation
- re-entry safety
- nuclear safety for applications in space
- planetary protection
Duties
You will report to the Head of the Independent Safety Office and, in close coordination with the Human and Robotic Exploration Product Assurance and Safety Team, your tasks and responsibilities will include:
- ensuring alignment with ESA-wide safety policies and multilateral agreements, developing and maintaining relevant safety policies, requirements and standards;
- defining safety requirements and processes for crew transportation systems and future human spaceflight missions with the relevant European industry and international partners;
- liaising with the relevant human spaceflight stakeholders to ensure a common understanding and interpretation of safety requirements, hazard control implementation and verification and resolution of non-conformance reports (NCRs);
- coordinating engineering activities for the Safety Review Panel (SRP), managing and distributing them to the relevant areas of expertise within TEC;
- as per delegated authority, acting on behalf of the Head of the Independent Safety Office to perform the activities of the SRP when required;
- advising and guiding ESA human spaceflight projects regarding compliance with the technical requirements and policies related to human spaceflight safety;
- regularly reporting at ESA corporate and programme level on compliance with the applicable requirements on human spaceflight safety;
- proposing improvements to working procedures to increase the SRP’s efficiency;
- developing and maintaining the expertise and technical competence of the SRP members to meet current and future needs in the area of human spaceflight;
- contributing to a positive working environment for the SRP team and coordinating the workforce allocated to SRP activities;
- monitoring applicable scientific and technological trends, and maintaining state-of-the-art expertise;
- contributing to the definition of technology development requirements and work plans for ESA’s technology programmes;
- supporting the Head of the Independent Safety Office in conducting other activities within the responsibilities of the Office.

Education
A master's degree in a relevant domain is required for this post.
Additional requirements
Solid experience and a background in spacecraft systems engineering and human spaceflight safety are required.
Experience in mission operations safety would be considered an asset.

In principle, recruitment will be within the advertised grade band (A2-A4). However, if the selected candidate has less than four years of relevant professional experience following the completion of the master’s degree, the position may be filled at A1 level.
Applicants must be eligible to access information, technology, and hardware which is subject to European or US export control and sanctions regulations & eligible to acquire the security clearance by their national security administrations.
During the recruitment process, the Agency may request applicants to undergo selection tests. Additionally, successful candidates will need to undergo basic screening before appointment, which will be conducted by an external background screening service, in compliance with the European Space Agency's security procedures.
