Job description

NOIRLab Chile is seeking an experienced Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Supervisor to lead and oversee safety, occupational health, and environmental programs across all Chilean sites and operations. This strategic role ensures a safe and compliant work environment in alignment with local and international regulations, leading a professional EHS team and collaborating across technical and operational departments. The position is based in La Serena and includes responsibility for multiple observatory and administrative sites throughout Chile.

What You'll Do

  • Lead a team of EHS professionals in a multicultural environment.
  • Supervise and coordinate all activities related to EHS and physical security across NOIRLab Chile operations.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate safety programs aligned with Chilean regulations, OSHA, NFPA, and other standards.
  • Conduct safety inspections, audits, and compliance reviews; recommend corrective actions.
  • Provide EHS training to staff, contractors, and visitors.
  • Oversee incident investigations and risk mitigation efforts.
  • Maintain EHS documentation and compliance reports.
  • Support budget planning and procurement processes for EHS-related services and vendors.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance in hazardous materials, laser safety, and emergency planning.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to ensure safe practices in critical work.
  • Coordinate Workers’ Compensation claims and ensure appropriate follow-up.
  • Ensure confidentiality of sensitive records and information.
  • Support safety and environmental management system improvements and risk assessments.
  • Provide expert advice on applicable regulations and foster a proactive safety culture.

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Protection, or a related field.
  • Active registration as a Health and Safety Professional with MINSAL.
  • At least 5 years of EHS experience, including 3+ years in supervisory roles in construction, logistics, mining, infrastructure, or observatories.

    Skills and Knowledge

    • In-depth knowledge of Chilean safety regulations and international standards (OSHA, NFPA, etc.).
    • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
    • Advanced spoken and written proficiency in English and Spanish.
    • Strong organizational and decision-making abilities.
    • Experience engaging with senior management, contractors, legal, government agencies, and vendors.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • ASP, TSP, or similar certification by BCSP.
    • Experience with ISO 45001 and/or ISO 14001 safety management systems.
    • Ability to develop training materials and conduct effective safety trainings.
    • Valid passport or ability to obtain one for international travel.

    Physical & Other Requirements

    • Physically able to perform field inspections at altitudes up to 3,000 meters.
    • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive on mountain or gravel roads.
    • May require medical clearance post-offer and during employment.
