The Position

We are looking for a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) System Engineer/MTS at our Richmond, BC, Canada office, to be a part of the next generation of Earth Observations space missions.

From detecting changes in fragile ecosystems to monitoring northern ice floes and shipping routes, our near-real time Earth observation data makes our Geointelligence team a leader in geospatial imagery, ground stations, enterprise geospatial systems and defence programs. You will join our remote sensing team that has 30+ years of experience delivering commercial and government projects such as RADARSAT-2, RapidEye, Sapphire, CASSIOPE, RADARSAT Constellation Mission and now the CHORUS Constellation of SAR satellites.

Role

This is a role suited for an ambitious professional wanting to solve complex problems and implement novel solutions that contribute to the betterment of our world. You will contribute to our world leading Synthetic Aperture Radar systems by designing a system that generates high value imagery and real-time actionable intelligence for our customers.

Responsibilities

As a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) System Engineer/MTS, you may have a wide range of responsibilities that include:

  • Participate in high-level SAR Payload design activities, including optimization and trade-offs between spacecraft and SAR payload capabilities;
  • Generate and maintain the requirements and performance budgets for SAR payload sub-system, including SAR antenna.
  • Radar system-level modelling to support design activities
  • Support and/or coordinate a cross-disciplinary team to converge on a design architecture that meets the mission requirements.
  • Support design review preparation and presentation; generate technical notes related to the design and analyses
  • Generate verification plan, matrices and detailed test requirements
  • Develop Test Plan, support test activities starting from the planning phase through to production
  • Review unit level & system level test data, evaluate non-compliances. Support efforts on automated data post-processing/management
  • Developing team members through mentoring and coaching
  • Support spacecraft communications systems requirements development and verification.
  • Participate in on-orbit radar calibration activities

Required Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • 5 or more years experience with increasing levels of complexity
  • Experience in Radar systems or other RF system design
  • Knowledge of RF and or Antenna fundamental concepts as applicable to radar systems engineering
  • Well-versed in the fundamental concepts of digital signal processing
  • Experience with Matlab & Simulink and other simulation tools such as Python
  • Self-starter with the ability to perform in a dynamic working environment
  • Possess excellent problem solving skills
  • Superb interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to explain concepts to wide-ranging audiences (e.g. technical team, sales team, executives, customers, etc)
  • The ability to work within a large organization and understand dependencies and stakeholder needs

Desired Experience:

  • Experience creating or using models and/or simulation software for radar or other wireless systems design
  • Experience with phased-array or other directive antennas. 
  • Previous experience in a space systems engineering environment
  • Appreciation for satellite based SAR Payload design and operations
  • Appreciation of Spacecraft design (e.g. Thermal, Power, Pointing accuracy, etc)
  • A strong understanding of geospatial data

Successful candidates must obtain and hold security clearance at the RELIABILITY status level, and pass security assessment for the Controlled Goods Program (CGP).

The compensation range for this position is $90,000- $130,000 annually. The specific compensation offered will be based on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
