Northrop Grumman, Strategic Space Systems Division, has an opening for a Senior Principal Materials & Processes (M&P) Engineer specializing in metals and metallic processes, to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, California.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs root cause analysis of material failures

  • Provides effective solutions to production metallics issues

  • Generates test plans & reports

  • Analyzes, researches, designs and develops metallic materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems

  • Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes

  • Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications

  • Material analyses, including failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications

  • Leads Tiger Team efforts in RCCAs related to metallurgical issues, presenting status to stakeholders and customers

  • Perform drawing reviews to ensure M&P requirements are satisfied

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with a minimum of 8 years of experience with a background in metallic materials; OR a Master of Science (MS) degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with a minimum of 6 years of experience with a background in metallic materials.

  • Experience with metal fabrication and design

  • Experience with repair processes for metal materials

  • Experience with the qualification of metals or metallurgical processes

  • Experience with material selection

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Your ability to obtain and/or transfer and maintain the final adjudicated government clearance, and any program access(es) required for the position within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company.

  • Master’s Degree in discipline of Materials Science or similar

  • Subject Matter Expertise in one of the following areas: Metals joining (soldering, brazing, or welding), forgings, advanced material selection, or heat treatment.

  • Experience with spacecraft structures

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment

  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and/or accomplishing them simultaneously

  • Ability to comprehend and analyze complex problems and develop solutions

  • Experience with military specs and standards

  • Experience interfacing with a military customer

Salary Range: $124,900.00 - $187,300.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
