Job description

As a Materials Engineering Intern at Impulse, you will support engineering & manufacturing in material selection, qualification, process development and failure analysis. 

Responsibilities

  • Assist in evaluating and selecting materials for aerospace applications (e.g., metals, composites, adhesives, coatings)
  • Support materials testing, including tensile, shear, thermal, and environmental exposure tests
  • Help develop and document manufacturing processes (e.g., welding, bonding, heat treating, surface treatments)
  • Contribute to root-cause analyses for material or process-related failures and recommend improvements
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure materials meet program requirements
  • Maintain and organize material data sheets, test reports, and process documentation

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently education in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field
  • Strong interest in materials, failure analysis, and aerospace manufacturing
  • Basic understanding of materials properties and common processing methods (e.g., casting, welding, machining)
  • Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and within a collaborative engineering environment

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Coursework or lab experience in metallurgy, polymers/composites, or surface treatments
  • Familiarity with ASTM standards, mechanical testing equipment, or material databases
  • Hands-on experience with fabrication, lab testing, or microscopy is a plus
Additional Information:

Compensation bands are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual level and base pay is determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related skills, education, experience, technical capabilities and internal equity. In addition to base salary, for full-time hires, you may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of stock options, and access to medical, vision & dental coverage as well as access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
