As part of strengthening its global Finance and Accounting team, Spire is seeking a Director, Technical Accounting who is passionate about adding value to the organization through strong and relentless focus on timely and accurate quarterly and annual financial accounting and reporting, process improvement and automation that will continue to enhance Spire’s scalability and success as a publicly held company.

This role will require proven public company U.S. GAAP accounting experience, practical problem-solving skills, and a good balance between strategic thinking and a willingness to roll up sleeves and dive into the detail.
The Director, Technical Accounting role will be responsible to manage new or changing accounting principles, assist with writing, updating and implementing finance and accounting policies, drive or assist with finance and accounting system integrations and implementations, manage our equity compensation programs, and coordinate efforts with external auditors as needed.
This role will report directly to the Chief Accounting Officer.
Responsibilities of your role:
- Review applicability of new accounting standards or disclosure requirements, provide technical guidance, and assist with implementing these new accounting principles.
- Collaborate with the Regional Controllers, Chief Accounting Officer, and Chief Financial Officer to develop, review and maintain financial accounting policies and standards.
- Proactively engage with the business the business to determine the proper accounting for non-routine or complex transactions and prepare memos
- Maintain a knowledge base of current industry practices to ensure best practices are monitored and considered
- Keep abreast of US GAAP, and other regulatory and technical guidance and regulations
- Facilitate training on various accounting topics as needed
- Drive or assist with the assessment, recommendation and implementation of improving or creating finance and accounting system integrations and/or implementations
- Assist in the preparation of quarterly financial presentations for senior leadership and audit committee.
- Serve as liaison with external auditors and internal audit compliance firm in support of an effective and efficient audit process and implement actions to remediate control deficiencies.
- Manage the accounting for our equity compensation programs.
Basic qualifications:
- 10+ years’ experience in accounting or related field.
- Qualified Accountant (CPA and/or CIA)
- Expert knowledge of GAAP, SEC and other accounting and reporting standards
Preferred qualifications:
- 7+ years of relevant experience including progressive experience with multinational (ideally US) public companies
- 4+ years of audit work in a big 4 firm, large global public company, or a combination of both.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, COSO, PCAOB Auditing Standards, risk and controls standards, and business process best practices.
- Extensive and proven experience of evolving and developing processes, controls and systems in support of U.S.-listed company requirements.
- Experience managing project work with tight deadlines and working in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong influencing skills with the ability to build effective partnerships across the organization.
- Collaborative and can be flexible in his/her approach.
- Have strong communication (both written and verbal) skills, excellent interpersonal skills, professional gravitas, and presentation skills that foster and build strong relationships with a wide range of different business partners and stakeholders. Ability to explain complex accounting and finance principles to non-finance colleagues.
- Operates at the highest level of professionalism and personal integrity.
Spire operates a hybrid work model, and this position will require you to work a minimum of three days per week in the office.
Access to US export-controlled software and/or technology may be required for this role. If needed, Spire will arrange the necessary licenses—this is not something candidates need to have before applying.

The anticipated base salary range for this position is listed below. Final base salary for this role will be based on the location, skills, experience and qualifications. In addition to base compensation, this role may be eligible for annual equity awards and our employee benefits program, including vacation, sick, and personal time off; optional medical, dental, vision, life, and disability coverage; a 401(K) plan; health and wellness reimbursement program; and participation in Spire’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
