Job description

Turning Space into a Transportation Layer for Earth

Who We Are:

Eras of humanity can often be defined by a dominant transportation mode - horse drawn chariots, ocean going boats, or aircraft. These were spurred by a small group of people rigorously focused on building technology to achieve faster access to more of the world.  We seek to usher in a new era of humanity defined by universal access to the whole globe free of borders and the presence of a routine way from space to Earth. To do this, we are building highly maneuverable re-entry vehicles that can loiter in orbit before precision landing back on Earth.

About the Role

As a Modeling and Simulation Engineer at Inversion, you will work as part of the simulation team to design, develop, and utilize computer-based models and simulations to analyze, predict, and optimize the complex, real-world systems and processes that are critical to the success of our flight systems. The simulation team is responsible for ensuring that flight software and flight hardware can be continuously integrated and tested under realistic flight conditions. You will play a key role in the design and development of high-fidelity computational models and numerical algorithms that will enable fast, repeatable development and deployment workflows across the engineering stack. Your work will empower Inversion’s engineering teams to iterate rapidly throughout the development life cycle and will strengthen Inversion’s ability to put our products into the hands of our customers with unprecedented speed and agility.

What You'll Do

  • Design and develop computational models of our flight systems and their operational environments to enable high-fidelity simulations of real-world scenarios to support engineering and operations workflows
  • Understand the underlying physics that governs the behavior of our flight systems across various domains
  • Develop models at varying levels of fidelity to accurately and efficiently simulate the critical physics
  • Develop emulators for hardware components
  • Contribute to the design and development of a simulation system capable of automatically provisioning and deploying resources to support simulation workflows

Required Qualifications

Candidates must meet all of the following qualifications to be considered for this position:

  • 9+ years of professional experience in modeling and simulation
  • Expertise in computational modeling of physical systems
  • Proficiency in one or more scripting languages (Python, Lua, Bash, PowerShell, etc.)
  • Proficiency in one or more scientific computing languages (C/C++, Julia, Python, R, MATLAB, etc.)

The ideal candidate will also meet one of the following qualifications:

  • Expertise with aerospace systems (space, aeronautical, hypersonic, etc.) and the physics of their respective environments
  • Expertise with high-performance computing (HPC)

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with modern DevOps practices
  • Experience with Linux-based systems

Our office headquarters is located in Playa Vista, CA. This position requires in office presence.

The California annual base salary for this role is currently $139,000 - $163,000.  Pay Grades are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data.  Individual pay will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: interviews and an assessment of several factors that are unique to each candidate, job-related skills, relevant education and experience, certifications, abilities of the candidate and internal equity.
