Job description
AST SpaceMobile and our global partners are building the first and only space-based cellular broadband network to be accessible by standard smartphones. Called SpaceMobile, this ultra-powerful network is being designed to provide connectivity at 4G/5G speeds everywhere on the planet – on land, at sea and in flight.
Job Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Electrical Harness Engineer to join our dynamic team working on state-of-the-art Leo (Low Earth Orbit) satellite systems. As an Electrical Harness Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and integrating the electrical harnesses that form the backbone of the satellite's electrical system. Your expertise will play a critical role in ensuring the reliable and efficient transfer of electrical power and data throughout the satellite, enabling successful missions and advancing space exploration.
Responsibilities:
- Design and develop electrical harnesses for Leo satellite systems, considering mission requirements, space constraints, thermal considerations, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements.
- Collaborate with the system engineering team, electrical designers, and mechanical engineers to define electrical harness specifications and establish design constraints for various satellite subsystems.
- Create and oversee detailed electrical harness drawings, including cable/wire routing, connector selection, splicing, and termination plans, using computer-aided design (CAD) tools.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, such as IPC-WHMA-A-620 and ECSS-E-HB-10-10, as well as space agency requirements, throughout the electrical harness design and manufacturing process.
- Conduct thorough analyses and simulations to verify the electrical harness's mechanical integrity, electrical performance, and resistance to environmental factors like vibration, shock, and thermal variations.
- Work closely with the manufacturing team to support the fabrication, assembly, and testing of electrical harnesses, providing guidance to ensure adherence to design specifications and quality standards.
- Perform in-house testing and validation of electrical harnesses, including continuity checks, insulation resistance, and signal integrity testing, to ensure optimal functionality and reliability in the space environment.
- Collaborate with external suppliers and vendors to source high-quality electrical components and materials for the harnesses, while maintaining cost-effectiveness and schedule adherence.
- Document all design and testing activities thoroughly, including test procedures, reports, and design change documentation, to facilitate project reviews and maintain traceability.
- Participate in design reviews and cross-functional meetings, providing technical insights and suggestions to optimize electrical harness designs and integration processes.
- Assist in troubleshooting and resolving electrical harness-related issues during satellite integration, testing, and in-orbit operations.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in electrical harness technologies, materials, and manufacturing techniques, and explore opportunities for continuous improvement and innovation in satellite harness design.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master’s degree in electrical engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Proven experience in designing electrical harnesses for space applications, with a focus on Leo satellite systems preferred.
- Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software for electrical harness design and documentation (e.g., AutoCAD, CATIA, NX).
- Strong understanding of electrical connectors, cables, and wiring, as well as familiarity with the selection of space-qualified components.
- Knowledge of electrical and signal integrity principles, EMC/EMI considerations, and grounding techniques for space applications.
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards and space agency requirements for electrical harness design, fabrication, and testing.
- Experience in performing mechanical and electrical testing of harnesses and interpreting test results.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external suppliers.
- Proven ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and manage priorities to meet project deadlines.
- Passion for space exploration and a desire to contribute to the success of Leo satellite missions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- D. in Electrical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering with a focus on electrical harness design for satellites.
- Experience with high-reliability harness design for small satellites, CubeSats, or other nano/microsatellites.
- Knowledge of space-rated materials and manufacturing processes for electrical harnesses.
- Familiarity with thermal analysis and thermal management techniques for satellite electrical systems.
- Previous work with major space agencies or satellite manufacturers in a similar capacity.
