Job description

The Coatings/Non-Metallics Materials Engineer is responsible for developing, testing, and qualifying coatings, performance polymers, resins/epoxies, and more for our space flight applications.  Material applications include thermal management, thermal protection, optical, electrical, structural, sealing, and more. 

Responsibilities

  • Identify applications on our spaceflight vehicles where high performance/new materials technologies can provide a quantifiable improvement (mass, performance, lifetime) 
  • Determine if commercially available materials solutions can improve our designs, and develop materials solutions when no commercial off the shelf solution exists 
  • Work with vendors and supply chain to source materials that meet our customers and our requirements 
  • Develop our testing capabilities into a full-service analytical lab for non-metallic materials 
  • Utilize our testing capabilities to characterize and qualify materials 
  • Write and maintain specifications relating to manufacturing, testing, handling, and usage of materials for spaceflight usage including maintaining an allowable materials document 
  • Collaborate with engineering and production on best practices for selection and usage of various materials 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials engineer or related field 
  • 4+ years of demonstrated experience and understanding of the usage of performance non-metallics materials and coatings for space flight applications 
  • 4+ years of demonstrated experience with thermal management approaches to spacecraft 

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degrees in materials engineering or related field 
  • 4+ years of direct experience with sputtering/thin film coatings 
  • A fundamental understanding of optical/thermal materials systems and coating design
  • A deep understanding of the process-property-performance relationship in materials

Compensation bands are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual level and base pay is determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related skills, education, experience, technical capabilities and internal equity. In addition to base salary, for full-time hires, you may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of stock options, and access to medical, vision & dental coverage as well as access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
