Job description

Building the space between proven and possible, MDA Space (TSX:MDA) is a trusted mission partner to the global space industry. A robotics, satellite systems and Geointelligence pioneer with a 55-year+ story of world firsts and more than 450 missions, MDA Space is a global leader in communications satellites, Earth and space observation, and space exploration and infrastructure. The MDA Space team of more than 3,000 space experts in Canada, the US and the UK has the knowledge and know-how to turn an audacious customer vision into an achievable mission – bringing to bear a one-of-a-kind mix of experience, engineering excellence and wide-eyed wonder that’s been in our DNA since day one. For those who dream big and push boundaries on the ground and in the stars to change the world for the better, we’ll take you there.

Are you ready to launch the next stage of your career in the new space economy? We would love to hear from you!

We have combined complex robotics with control software to develop mission critical robotic systems such as the Mobile Servicing System (MSS) for the International Space Station (ISS) and, previously, the robotic arms for the Space Shuttle. The MSS serves a vital role in keeping the ISS operational through continuous robotic operations to maintain and repair the space station, enable resupply missions and support a host of daily ISS operations. Today, MDA is developing sophisticated systems for new projects such as an artificial intelligence-enabled robotic system known as Gateway External Robotics System (GERS) - to assemble and maintain a lunar staging outpost orbiting the moon enabling future exploration missions, human lunar landings, missions to explore Mars and on-orbit servicing of satellites.

The Position:

We’re on the hunt for a robotic Mission Systems & Operations Engineer on MDA’s Robotics and Space Operations team, on-site at the Canadian Space Agency in St Hubert, Quebec. In this role, the candidate will be part of the Engineering Support Lead group that provides real-time engineering support during operations of the Canada’s robotic systems known as the Mobile Servicing System (MSS) onboard the International Space Station (ISS).  In this exciting role, you will have a direct impact in supporting and enabling the success of human spaceflight exploration. Duties would include some or all of the following:

  • Provide systems engineering support to real-time robotic operations of space station assembly and maintenance missions involving Canadarm2 and Dextre.
  • Troubleshoot system behaviour anomalies –both on-orbit or on-ground systems; determine root cause, and the appropriate technical resolution.
  • Flight following of on-orbit operational tasks to maintain situational awareness for providing timely response to requests from ISS Mission Control teams.
  • Monitoring MSS performance and identifying deviations in the MSS system performances.
  • Performing desktop reviews of flight procedures from a systems engineering perspective and provide comments to the Operations Engineering Centre Lead
  • Acting as a subject matter expert on MSS elements and participate in system level technical discussions with our customer (the Canadian Space Agency) and NASA.
  • Support training of astronauts and flight controllers as a Subject Matter Expert.
  • Utilize and/or develop augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) applications for our zero-g robotics lab (DREAMR Lab) to emulate on-orbit performance of robots to plan and troubleshoot on-orbit operations as well as help in rapid prototype design of robotic systems and operations techniques.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Interested candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, Engineering Physics, or Computer Engineering and/or Applied Mathematics or Physics.  A strong ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as a member of a team is required.

  • Preferably, the applicant should have a post graduate degree in Engineering some exposure to space operations and have a passion for human spaceflight exploration.
  • A strong ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as a member of a team is required.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication skills are essential to this position.

Successful candidates must obtain and hold security clearance at the reliability status level, and pass security assessment for the Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and ITAR.

We’re a dream team of purpose-driven, collaborative and passionate people, and we are constantly looking for others to join #TeamMDA to ignite new and innovative approaches to problem-solving that push us forward to improve life on and above Earth. If you’re excited to expand our place in space and driven to inspire the next generation, we’ll take you there.

We have entered a new era of exploration and development, and MDA Space welcomes all who yearn to suit up and be part of it. An equal opportunity employer prizing diversity, integrity and collaboration, we are committed to growing MDA Space and Canada’s leadership in this next golden age.
