MISSION OF THE POSITION

The Structures Subsystem Integrated Product Team (IPT) Lead is responsible for overseeing the entire product lifecycle of the Structures Subsystem, from initial design and development through to delivery verification. This role will provide technical expertise to cross-functional teams, ensuring that the Structures Subsystem meets all requirements ensuring successful implementation and deployment. This position also involves determining technical objectives, representing the organization as a prime technical contact, and guiding the development and implementation of engineering solutions to ensure compliance and safety.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Product Lifecycle Management and Integration

  1. Responsible for the overall product lifecycle of the Structures Subsystem from design and development to delivery verification for Starlab.
  2. Leads and participates in system and subsystem level trades and analyses to ensure the vehicle design meets all physical, mechanical and environmental requirements.
  3. Leads a team of Responsible Engineers and subcontractors designing and delivering subassemblies and components the spacecraft’s Primary Structure, Secondary Structure, Windows, Vibration Isolation System, and Micro-Meteriod and Orbital Debris (MMOD) hardware.
  4. Develops and oversees the implementation of engineering solutions, including planning, deployment, resource allocation, testing, documentation, integration, and compliance and safety.
  5. Liaise with all levels of program and engineering staff on design, integration and test matters and support other teams/disciplines as necessary.
  6. Support program design and readiness reviews.
  7. Communicates development status and generates relevant metrics to monitor development progress.

 

Technical Problem Solving

  1. Defines technical objectives for solutions addressing complex engineering challenges.
  2. Represents the organization as a prime technical contact for the Structures Subsystem.

 

Development Planning and Scheduling

  1. Works the System Engineering to define the Structures Subsystem’s structural, mechanical, electrical, environmental design and integration requirements, including its constituent assemblies and components for both flight and non-flight (GSE) hardware.
  2. Formulate and maintain development plans and schedule inputs as execution occurs.
  3. Develop Basis of Estimates for assigned program tasks and proposals.
  4. Provide schedule status, estimate to complete (ETC), and variance inputs to cost account managers.
  5. Plans and coordinates the maintenance of engineering solutions, including documentation, reporting, publishing, and create technical/ other presentations, to ensure the solutions continued viability in an evolving environment.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. May function in an advisory or leadership role for a project/program and provide direction and guidance to professional staff.
  2. Perform additional duties as assigned. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Lead the cross functional team to define the Structures Subsystem’s scope by providing programmatic leadership and collaborating with the resource owners and other functional organizations to manage the IPT workload.

COMPETENCIES

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in engineering or a related technical field from an accredited institution. 
  • Equivalent engineering experience may be considered in place of a degree. 

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES

  •  No certification or licenses required.

EXPERIENCE

  • 12+ years of progressive engineering experience with a bachelor’s degree.
  • 10+ years of progressive engineering experience with a master’s degree.
  • 7+ years of progressive engineering experience with a PhD.
  • Must have at least 6 years of spacecraft or space system design experience.
  • Must have at least 3 years of experience in leading technical teams.
  • Demonstrate systems engineering experience in the entire lifecycle.
  • Experience providing technical leadership for the Structures Subsystem.  
  • Experience preparing for and presenting at customer reviews.
  • Experience in risk management, earned value management, configuration management, and requirements management.
  • Experience in schedule development using Microsoft project.
  • Experience using Solidworks or other 3D computer aided design software.

  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment and organize work assignments to meet established timetables.
  • Desire to lead and handle small teams on fast-paced hardware and flight projects.
  • Strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required, as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Great interpersonal skills working in a team environment.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability, including the ability to work extended hours when required and adjust to shifting priorities and workloads.
