Northrop Grumman, Space Systems, is seeking a Principal/Sr. Principal Aeronautical Engineer (Project Engineer) to join our Minuteman III Propulsion Sustainment team. This position will be at our Propulsion Systems Division facility located at Hill AFB, UT.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The Minuteman III Project Engineer for Flight Testing will be responsible for leading missile flight testing including pre-flight activities, flight monitoring, flight data analysis, trending, and reporting; and flight data analysis tool development and support. It also includes static test data analysis, trending, and database management. This Project Engineer position works within a team that includes the NG flight analyst, Air Force, and other contractor counterparts to plan and execute flight testing which includes pre & post flight test activities, monitor launch day flight data, flight anomaly investigations, and provide recommended countermeasures to the Air Force customer as needed This role will report to the Air Force Sustainment Chief Engineer (Manager 3).

Job Duties:

  • Serve as Lead for the NG MMIII Flight Test support and analysis team

  • Provide overall leadership, direction and applicable management to the Flight Test Team consisting of engineers and analysts from NG, Boeing, and Aerojet.

  • Prepare pre-flight documentation and certifications, monitor data during test flights; oversee receipt and processing of telemetered flight data, flight data analysis, preparation of flight test result briefings and reports, and MATLAB coding to improve and expand flight data analysis tools; investigate and resolve flight test anomalies.

  • Act as a technical focal point for the customer ensuring customer satisfaction with all flight test support efforts including participation in customer and government review boards

  • Provide input to and participation in Air Force customer escalation briefings up to the Global Strike Command level

  • Work on problem solving and failure investigations of flight issues

  • Drive timely and clearly communicated decisions and recommendations

  • Work closely with the Program Manager to manage technical execution of the Flight Test support program

  • Manage cost and schedule for the technical effort on the Flight Test support program

  • Work with Science & Engineering functional management to assure proper technical support

  • Drive technical excellence into the Flight Test Team (by upholding technical standards for project, managing technical risks, supporting cost goals, and ensuring requirements compliance)

  • Provide other support for the MMIII Propulsion sustainment effort as requested by the Chief Engineer

Basic Qualifications:

This position can be filled at either a level 3 or level 4.

Basic Qualifications for a level 3:  

  • Bachelors in Engineering or similar discipline and 5 years, 3 Years with Masters or 1 Year with PhD

Basic Qualifications for a level 4:  

  • Bachelors in Engineering or similar discipline and 8 years, 6 Years with Masters or 4 Year with PhD

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to qualify for or already hold a DoD clearance

  • Experience with MATLAB coding and data bases

  • 5+ yrs experience in solid rocket motor or ordnance component design, analysis, manufacturing, project engineering, or systems engineering

  • Ability to travel:  Travel expectation of 5% – 10%

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in flight analysis, flight modeling or ballistic analysis, motor and flight control hardware / design

  • Engineering leadership experience in solid rocket motor development, qualification, and production cycles

  • Demonstrated credibility with internal and external customers

  • Coordination of engineering efforts across multiple design and analysis groups as well as teams consisting of multiple disciplines

  • MS preferred

Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience with problem solving, problem investigation teams and critical decision making skills

  • Strong sense of urgency and work ethic in ensuring engineering meets customer and program expectations in a timely and efficient manner

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including demonstrated experience with high value customer presentations

  • Demonstrated team leadership skills - leader of significant technical projects or investigations and management of multiple program tasks

  • Ability to qualify for DOD secret clearance

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

  • Able to see how a complex system works (big picture) while working on individual component details and interactions to identify effects in data and determine cause within the hardware

  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects while maintaining focused results within reliability, quality, schedule, and budget requirements / constraints

  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems (Examples: experience with Decision Focus, Fault-tree, Kepner-Tregoe, Fishbone diagrams)

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80A. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

This role may offer a competitive relocation assistance package.

Salary Range: $95,300.00 - $142,900.00Salary Range 2: $118,600.00 - $178,000.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
